I retired and stayed here also. Used to live in Parkton over by you. Over in Vass now. Been here since 1987 and have seen Bragg go from excellent hunting to being a challenge.Congrats! I’ve heard stories of how it used to be before the woodpecker program started up. There was definitely a lot more deer but I’ve heard they were much smaller and few bucks.I retired and stayed here also. Used to live in Parkton over by you. Over in Vass now. Buck to Doe ratio may have been out of whack, but you could drive through just about any area and see good sign crossing any of the fire breaks. If you look back at some of the old Pics and Data from that time frame you will see there was some good deer even then. Would like to see them open up the safety zones around the impact areas again, like it use to be also. Talking to the forestry guys there are some real good deer in the impact areas and lots of good food sources there also. Oaks and good brose, not just pines and wire grass. Still I mainly use Bragg for Sunday hunting or if I need to be close by. Mostly hunt Pee Dee River NWR late season when it opens back up for archery. Other area I like to hit is Butner Falls of the Neuse above Raleigh. Plenty of hard woods and food for them there with some good archery only areas.I’ve heard stories of how it used to be before the woodpecker program started up. I’ll definitely have to check some of those other NWRs out. I’ve looked at the data and pics from Bragg over the years and you can see a drastic drop in harvest numbers after the woodpecker program started. There were years when 800-1200 were harvested and we average ~200 per season. I agree the buck to doe ratio was way off but the biologist have got it back to a manageable level. I would like for them to open up the impact areas but I don’t see it happening, it would also help if they had more than one GW working.Buck to Doe ratio may have been out of whack, but you could drive through just about any area and see good sign crossing any of the fire breaks. Don’t worry about being that guy. I report every thing I see like that, I do it for their safety and mine. I have been a volunteer wildlife technician for the past couple of years while I work on my degree and you wouldn’t believe some of the stories that come from there.Your right they probably never will, did participate years ago in a quota for the impact area (active only then). On GW, yes they need more, I have found and reported numerous things like corn pile (not allowed) and people hunting that are not even signed out or with a gun in areas closed for guns. Don't like being that guy but it messes it up for everyone.
Cool man! I’m in grays creek
