Okay, many of you have followed my struggles trying to use my TL Saddle and get comfortable with it. Last time I used it I was dancing all around the tree trying to get and stay comfortable. The biggest issue I had was the constant knee pressure while kneeling against the tree and to a lesser extent discomfort in my feet. I've made an accessory for the saddle that I tried out in my yard and seemed to remove most of the issues I was dealing with. Now don't laugh, but I've added a kickstand to it. It's kind of like a GW fishtail but it is adjustable and can be clipped on the saddle or taken off as needed.

Kickstand 3 (Medium).jpg

The kickstand is made from an old cane that I had around the house. I cut off the handle and drove a wooden dowel into the handle end and drilled a pilot hole through the center of the dowel. I had a short section of 1" nylon webbing with a loop on each end from an earlier project. I ran a 1/4" lag screw through the strap and into the pilot hole previously drilled in the wooden dowel. On the other end where the rubber foot is, I ran a self tapping screw through the bottom from the inside so it would protrude about a 1/4" beyond the bottom to grip into the tree bark. This was just a quick fix to try the thing out. The rubber foot will be discarded and replaced with a more fitting contact point.

Two biners were attached to the loops on the nylon strap ends. Once I'm set up in the tree and hanging by my tether I clip the two biners to the leg straps on the TL saddle and swing the kickstand up into position against the tree. I can adjust the length in one inch increments to suit my comfort needs. I can adjust it so there is little pressure to no pressure on my knees. I found that I liked it the best adjusted so there was light pressure on my knees. I was quite pleased to find out how comfortable it was with the kickstand in place. I can swing from side to side quite easily (within reason) without the tree contact slipping. I can stand up and the kickstand stays in place which surprised me. I thought it was swing down if I stood up. If I want to get it out of the way, I can easily position it to hang down under me. It won't bump into anything because it is hanging directly under my butt and won't reach my platform nor the tree.

The only issue that I encountered was the biners on the leg straps pulled the leg straps in towards the boys making it a little snug but not bad. Possibly a small spreader bar to separate the biners by about 4" might just to the trick, but as it is, it's ready to hunt even though improvements might come along. At least for me a huge improvement over the TL without the kickstand, enough so that I removed a hang on tree stand (that I couldn't get to be quiet) and set up my Cheap and Dirty Platform in a primary hunting area. I just may kill a buck from this thing yet....

That's interesting. I'm in a TL as well. I'd like to hear how your season "sits" with you.

Very interesting solution. I would be worried about maneuvering for a shot and it swinging down. Sounds like you are thinking through that issue. I like it.

I made a similar set up last year for a sit drag. I used an oak dowl to act as a spreader.

When you stand up to shoot, the "T" swings down between your legs

I think it would. The problem I ran into is the dowel can be pretty tight against your belly depending on how svelt you are.

I do like the idea but have a concern. In the heat of the moment when you are getting into position on an approaching animal how do you go about removing the kick stand with out making noise while moving at what always seems like a million miles an hour. Do you simply push away from the tree and it falls between your legs without make noise with out the two biners hitting each other. Great idea but worried something would hang me up.

Another issue I see is when descending the tree at the end of the hunt is it removable? I see it getting in my way? With all the gear we take up the tree it always seems the descent is more tricky. I can simply see the kick stand getting snagged on a branch and causing a hang up or a fall.

Trying to think quiet and move ability while hunting and the safety first thing while descending when it's time to leave.

Awesome, Ricky. Can I see a pic of how and where you are attaching this to the under-side of your saddle?

Ernie, that's great. Have been thinking about the same type of set to keep the pressure off my hips and keep me off my tree. Seeing it helps a lot. Using the carabiner and using the dowel vs all PVC help me a lot.

If you need to ready yourself for a shot, you can drop it down under you, it won't make any noise. It won't hit your platform or tree and the biners won't hit each other.
The other option is to grab the kickstand and pull it up and pull the front of your jacket over the end of it. That sounds like a pain but I tried it this morning and could do it without much movement in less than 2 seconds.
I hunted with it again this morning and I'm impressed with how well it works.
I carry the kickstand attached to my backpack. You could stick it through one of the molly loops or clip it to any belt or straps. Once I get tethered to the tree, I hang my backpack on the backside of the tree. Then remove the kickstand from the backpack and clip it to the leg straps, adjust the length and settle in. Before I climb down I just reverse the order.

Hi Ernie

Is that dowel used to make it swivel easier and so it is quiet. I just tried it with all 3/4 inch pvc tees and pipe and it is noisy. Also how long is your whale tail.

It's was a work in progress. The dowel allows the tail to pivot down easier and it all stores easier for walking as you can take it apart. There was still too much rattle in it however, so I was thinking of wrapping the dowel to make it a little better fit. Honestly I haven't messed around with it in a while.

I am still enjoying the GW whale tail. I did get a sit drag. After the rut, I may try what I was trying to get the other saddle hunters to try.

https://www.amazon.com/Hopping-Ball-15-Bounce-Hoppity/dp/B0030CH864

15" diameter bouncy ball with handle to attach to carabiner. Gotta have some comfort to rest one's undercarriage on an air cushion and not be bark to ball$. And can use it for comfort while ground hunting.

Is anyone going to try this, or will I be the first one to have a "my little pony" or pink bouncy ball part of my sit drag "rig"?
