Rappelling rope

It works without a doubt, but I want something a little more secure.

Tying the figure 8 off at 30 feet can be a little unsettling.

It's ability to "catch" will change with different rope sizes but it works exactly like the grigri just in a smaller, stronger and lighter package. I only have experience using it with 9mm ultratech and as long as I do my part and have control of the trailing rope, it locks up amazingly fast and secure.

So should I just get one of these? I'm extremely excited about rapelling down next season and getting a lot of practice in this spring.

I don't want it to sound like a cop out but it's entirely up to you. I started out with the grigri then after a lot of research I found the lifeguard. My grigri is now retired.

I'm looking forward to learning with the Lifeguard. I chose it over grigri because it takes large rope and it looks to be solid built.

Yes. Im using the ropeman as a safety just in case I unweight the lifeguard. But I also use it in place of a hand ascender. That along with the lifeguard makes for a small light weight RADS system.
 
Really am liking the idea of rappelling down this next year. What are you guys doing with the excess rope while in the tree? Are you letting it just hang to the ground and if so would not your movment in the tree as you position for the shot attract unwanted attention? (Meaning wouldn't your rope move at the base of the tree if you do)

I will likely use a separate tether. I did think about adding a pouch to the back of my sit drag. Then you could use your rappelling rope as a tether. Leave a little slack then around the bridge a time or two then into the dump pouch. You would just need to remember to unwrap it before you dropped it and started down.
 
I was thinking a dump pouch may work also. Would like to hear what some of you other guys that have been doing this for a while are doing?
