Rappelling rope

It's ability to "catch" will change with different rope sizes but it works exactly like the grigri just in a smaller, stronger and lighter package. I only have experience using it with 9mm ultratech and as long as I do my part and have control of the trailing rope, it locks up amazingly fast and secure.

So is there a way to lock this off to take down your platform or not? I guess I thought there was.

as long as you keep your weight on it, it will stay " locked " and you can hang like a spider on a web all day long if you want too. but to be safe you should always have control of the trailing rope. I use 9mm ultratech and I wrap the trailing rope around the lifeguard and wedge it between the body and the cam. its hard to describe so Ill try to get a few pictures.

I will have to try it a little lower. I did my first rappel this evening. Little scary to trust it all. Thing has a great brake though. Easy to hold with one hand. I will have to try a short distance above ground level to see about this hanging like a spider business!

Learning to trust your equipment and loosing the fear of falling is the hardest part.

Yes. Im using the ropeman as a safety just in case I unweight the lifeguard. But I also use it in place of a hand ascender. That along with the lifeguard makes for a small light weight RADS system.
I'd like to see a picture of how you set up the ropeman as an ascender. Are you just gripping it and pulling it up?

Yes, just grab the ropeman and pull up with one hand and pull down on the rope looped through the carabiner with your other hand. If you want you can add a foot loop to the carabiner also and use your legs but that's just another thing to carry. I'll try to take a picture this weekend. you can also look up TreeFool on youtube. he's a crazy guy but he has a lot of good videos on tree camping and climbing. one video in particular shows the rope man as a hand ascender.

Ipv77, Here's the pictures for you.
First one is the rope man as an ascender. notice the black strap, thats my foot loop.

Second Picture, Lifeguard lock off while hanging.

Can you show that lock off from a couple different sides? I'm curious and somewhat tempted.

Erniepower, I did in post #83. The only difference is I came over the top in this picture and from underneath in post 83. I wouldn't call it 100% locked but it keeps the cam from being able to open up and release the rope. It would be better with larger rope like predator or bandit. The best way and most secure is to leave the ropeman on and use a small web runner from carabiner to carabiner. I showed that in an earlier picture also, page 4 post #73.

That what I imagined. I like it. Less bulk and probably quieter than a hand ascender

One thing I did, because I hate how the handle is sideways; I bought a solid ring similar to Ernie's petzls. I plan to put my bridge through it then hook up to that to rotate my Grigri so on rappel I pull the handle towards my body.

Could someone tell me if 3/8" kern mantle would be a good choice for rappelling I'm getting ready to buy some gaffs and would like to rappel down but I'm a bigger guy being 6'6" and 255lb want to make sure my set up is safe

Depends on the rope, what's the mean breaking strength?

If you can suggest so something better just let me know want to make sure that I get something that is adequate

I am using 9mm sterling htp. At a mean breaking strength of just over 5000 pounds the safe working load limit is 519 pounds. To be even safer you can always go up to the 11mm climbing ropes. I started with some of the kermantle ropes and 11mm yale bandit until I got comfortable with ropes and all of my gear.
