Ozone and scentlok

Great discussion guys. Thanks for the info (even though most went over my head).

One more question/clarification - would it be better to ozonate the wash water or expose the clothes to ozone in a bin and then wash? Curious on this one since scentlok sells an Activator product for ozonating your wash water.

Here is what I am doing to create a semi-Ozone closet in my garage for hunting gear.... also I have a Tupperware specifically for my gear to go straight from closet to Tupperware before getting to the vehicle so I can get dressed in the field. The Ozone generator does up to 80 Cu. Ft has a 120 and a 12v auto adapter for ease of use in both units. a little Velcro in each setup an dim good to go. all for under $80!!!! After reading what I have read I believe I will store my scentlok in garment bags to preserve the carbon within. however every other piece of equipment I own with be stored inside the closet in open Ozone air. The flaps on closet roll down and then zip closedcloset.jpg ozone.jpg
 
ok, I know the thread is titled scentlok, but I'm one of the guys doing "carbon dipping". So just to confirm what I think I read:
  • Ozone does in fact alter the effectiveness of carbon, but that effect is not significant until the garments are ozone treated several times?
  • In my case a simple protocol adjustment might be to "re-dip" after 3 or 4 ozone treatments?
my protocol: wash in baking soda, dry, carbon dip, dry, use, repeat as necessary (store air tight when not in use)

I was planning to introduce an ozone generator for packs, bow, and other gear that doesn't wash or soak so well. My plan was to just leave everything and the generator going in a cabinet to treat it after use.
 
Actually, ozone does regenerate activated carbon by two mechanisms:
1. Complete mineralization of adsorbed molecules to carbon dioxide
2. Oxidation of adsorbed molecules to more polar molecules (e.g. acids, alcohols, aldehydes, etx). These polar molecules are more readily removed from the clothing during wash cycles.

Unfortunately, ozone also oxidizes the activated carbon resulting in an increase in acid functional groups on the activated carbon as well as a reduction in the active surface area. This results in a general degradation in adsorptive performance / scent reduction if the garment is repeatedly subjected to high doses of ozone.
Is this loss of adsorptive performance permanent or will the scent lok regenerate normally in the dryer. I use scent lok and an $100 ozone generator in a sealed hunting room between hunts.

It sounds like the loss in performance is permanent, as you're reducing the surface area of the activated carbon. I don't think regenerating it adds surface area back to the activated carbon, but I could be wrong.

Permanent but I wouldn't stop using ozone for this reason. There is a fair amount of irreversible adsorption onto the carbon if only using a dryer. The dryer simply can't get hot enough to blow off the high molecular weight non polar compounds that are very sticky to the carbon. Ozone often renders these sticky compounds more water soluble which potentially frees up the carbon.
 
@BassBoysLLP - it would fun to hypothesize and test a few assumptions about scentlok performance in the field VS raw adsorptive capabilities of activated carbon(AC).
  • Assume user has 90% of the surface area of their skin covered in AC garment
  • Averaged adsorptive capacity of complete scentlok/AC suit ie: footwear, pants, jacket, gloves, balaclava/headmask
  • Averaged amount of VOCs off-gassed by an individual over a fixed period of time (say 4 hours) that would potentially be adsorbed by a scentlok suit
  • Estimated degradation of scentlok suit performance over same period of time / amount of scentlok AC surface area utilized
  • Estimated degradation of scentlok suit adsorptive capability from washing / ozone treatment / dryer regeneration
Of course there's probably a host of variables that need to be figured out, but it would be interesting to come up with some loose estimates about scentlok performance and general activated carbon adsorptive capabilities.

I think your saying we need real science and double blinded studies statistically validated. I would agree. I am using scent lok based on hope and a bit of science. My experience which is not reliable - unscientific testimonies never are, is scent lok and ozone works - I saw more deer this year. Perhaps because of better scouting or perhaps because of scent lok or both.
I also blew more chances with deer through my inexperience, because I saw more deer - fourth year hunting. I am too noisy, moving too much , arrows hitting branches, getting too excited when a deer comes in and even sleeping in my guidos web waking up looking at deer. All the basics.
I have had some success tough.. Providence and hard work .
I feel like a kid hunter but I am 59 years old. All great fun.

How do I know scent lok works. I think it might work and John Eberhart says it works based on his experience.
