Leaving June 3rd for 8 days of hiking, finding water, setting up ground blinds and trees for September. Been going last 7 years and it makes a huge difference when you know the country you're hunting. A unit is huge and learning ground is paramount to success. Gonna set up some cameras, hope bears will leave them alone, sometimes they do, sometimes they will climb up a tree to eat one hung high. Can't wait to smell mountain air!

Have fun! The bears around here love my trail cameras! I finally got smart enough to not set any up without bear boxes. I honestly think the cameras draw them in so good that you could use them instead of bait for bears lol.

I think it's the IR attracts them.

I'm SOOOOOO jealous. I had to cancel my Montana trip this year. BOOOOOO.

The mountains are special. My soul belongs there.

Got 5 setups made so far, shrubbed entrance trails, set waypoints for entry and exit routes, etc. Got 2 more days to scout till I fly home Sunday.

Outstanding! My son and I are fulfilling a life long dream this fall... Heading to the Sarvis Creek Wilderness this September. Have you ever hunted there before? Any tips?

Never hunted there, so no help there. Few things I've learned in 13 years of elk hunting:
Good, broken in boots
Be in best shape you can
Chapstick
Moleskin and duct tape
Water filter bottle
Extra batteries
It only takes one elk to have a great hunt
Enjoy it, successful or not, as most will never experience it.

Well back to the real world in Texas. I was happy with my fitness overall, we dropped into valleys everyday with 1000-1400ft drop. I know what to work on now for September hunt. I wore 2 new boots to try out while there, UA Bozeman, Irish Setter vaportec. Both met my expectations for my purposes. We saw a few elk and on Saturday, I had a lion 25 yards from me, must have been a young one as I think it hung around and watched me setup a juniper tree on a bench of a mountain where three trails interesected. They often will follow you around for a bit, curious. Set up 6 cameras, so time will tell. Great trip.
