A lot of people are trying out the bigger platforms now, if I'm reading post trends accurately.
hopefully they keep wanting those bigger platforms...Im trying to up my inventory of GenII predators...Using kiwi spurs and a gen2 predator this season...total weight less than 5 lbs for climbing method and platform...unbeatable in my bookA lot of people are trying out the bigger platforms now, if I'm reading post trends accurately.
Is toe hooking the only way to get the gen1 rock solid? I feel like I’ve tried everything, but the toe hook is unmatched.I toe hook mine, too.
I'm firmly convinced that the type of tree bark is an important factor in deciding when/if to toe hook. Soft, thick bark (like walnut)...no problem with a hook.
Thin, hard bark (like beech)...be gentile with a hook.
I have a Predator, and won’t be selling it. The size is perfect and I never had any issues with grip even with a ton of side pressure.
I one-sticked with a scout on my stick for a lot of the season, but ordered a Predator pack and will be one-sticking or no sticking with the Predator next season.
I have a question for all of the Predator guys. How do I know if mine is a Gen 1 or Gen 2?

Don't worry about it. It's a good platform. Mine has been great for me.
Gen1 on LEFT
Gen2 on RIGHT

Thanks for that.
I thought I had the Gen 2, but wasn’t sure how to confirm. That confirms it.

Next season will be my first time saddle hunting. I have been watching classified for gear. I find it disconcerting when I am seeing so many people selling off their predator platform. I have seen where people are having some break at the adjustment. Is that the main reason? I have seen enough sales that it makes me want to shy from that platform. Am I missing something else here?
I have been giving the Treehopper Tree Suit a lot of study lately. I dont need a huge platform but just enough for my feet. Also since everything is pack in and out and it only weighs 1.5lbsThere are better platforms available, and from companies that address and fix problems rather than just replacing the platform once it breaks.
Whatever gear you go with, you need to have confidence in both the gear, and the values of the company who makes it.
You’re already asking the question because you have doubts about the Predator. Some will break. Some won’t. Tethrd knows this and has done nothing besides “well, we’ll replace it if it breaks”. They should have recalled and redesigned.
If you want a solid platform, go with a Ridge Runner or Podium from Out On A Limb, or check out the Mission from Trophyline.

Not always. I believe the texture of the bark has a lot to do with how solid it sets. The initial strap tension and placement matters, too. I can get it fairly solid on thin bark trees with minimal toe hook. Softer, thick bark seems to take a more aggressive toe hook.Is toe hooking the only way to get the gen1 rock solid?
