Scent control regiment and FACTS about activated carbon

I'm sure to some extent the scentlok suits probably work but I'm also pretty sure that Johns success probably wouldn't of changed much if he didn't ever use scentlok at all. I think his woodsmanship and hunting 25' and above has a lot more todo with his success.

Or someone could argue that without the scentloc/ scent regiment his trail would get busted on the way to the stand and he would have a hard time seeing the first booner much alone 30.
I bet he's not ready to change up his scent regiment to none anytime soon.

Question, so are you guys literally just throwing your garments in your regular dryer where all your other regular clothes are being washed?
does this not add unwanted odors to the scentblocker garments due to dryer sheets and detergents from previous loads of regular clothes?
I am just curious here , hopefully someone can answer this for me. Whats the process?
First, I only use scent lok, its been a while since I have read on it but I don't think scentblocker is as effective.

To answer your questions, yes, that is exactly what I do. I do the rest of my clothes in unscented detergent and I push for my wife to do that but she doesn't always listen. I am 100% confident that my system works.

I believe John Eberhart even stated somewhere that he didn't even push his wife to go completely scent free on the dryer but his son Chris had. I can't remember my source so don't quote me on that :p

Okay, I know my wife uses pretty scenty stuff but I'll try it. I usually just wash them by hand with detergent ; I didn't know about reactivating it.

I use ScentBlocker stuff. They have the S3 ScentBlocker merino wool base layers I use in the winter and featherlight ScentBlocker pants and shirt I plan to wear in the summer. So is my stuff no good? I guess I need to do research on the difference between mine and the scent lok.

Your absolutely right he is definitely doing something right. I'm not knocking the guy I have 2 of his books but I just feel telling people to put on a scentlok suit and forget the wind isnt sending a good message for hunters.

Agree with Wall Hanger. Hunt the wind! I have actually had more success with ozonics than anything else. I was frankly very surprised with my own experience with it. Anyone else have experience with ozonics?

I would be curious to hear what @John Eberhart has to say about Scent Blocker.... I am not 100% convinced but John Eberhart is definitely doing some stuff right based on his success.
John, I have listened to some podcasts you have done and read some articles. You mention Scent Loc regularly but not some other brands. Is there a reason for that?

He's not telling people that at all. Just that he doesn't hunt the wind because of his extreme scent control routine.

If I recall it's because ScentBlocker uses a different type of activated carbon which is less effective than the type ScentLok uses.

It's worth noting that just because a brand ie: ScentLok, ScentBlocker slaps their logo on something doesn't mean the product has any scent-controlling technology. Merino wool is still merino wool... it has natural antimicrobial properties that help reduce odor caused from microbes, but unless it's impregnated with activated carbon it's just not going to be nearly as effective that a garment that is.

I'm kind of miffed at ScentLok because in their 2017 line they started to introduce garments that were only partially or not-at-all impregnated with activated carbon. These can be identified by the silver 'S' logo and not the silver and orange.

I get it - it's their attempt to branch into different demographics and markets - but it's still disappointing because you have to really pay attention to their catalogue and the product features now to make sure you are getting a garment that uses 100% activated carbon throughout.

well that's just great.... I just started reading John's book "Hunting Pressured Whitetails" and I have no problem following his guidance as this is only my 3rd year to deer hunt.
I bought a bunch of Scent blocker stuff on sale. Maybe next year i will invest in scent-lok brand stuff.
Till then, i will have to survive with my "less effective" gear and be super cognoscente of my scents. Sounds like i need some rubber boots. Any recommendations on a good comfortable brand?

I appreciate the help guys, your awesome!

I have lacrosse aeroheads and they are fantastic. I have both the 3.5mm and the 7mm for early and late season, respectively.

If you have wide feet muck boots feel better and still trap your scent
I guess boots should not be in this thread but just commenting on above?

Don't worry, you'll spend lots of money on your journey in hunting gear. I still do lol. In my personal experience when I first started using carbon clothing, I noticed I got winded when I was wearing scent blocker. I never get winded with scent lok. Just my personal observations.

I have used the aero hunter boots but I found them to be pretty heavy. I prefer a pair of the lacrosse alpha burleys that fit well so I have less of a chance of rolling my ankles in them lol.

Scent-lok has the patent on using activated carbon in hunting garments, which is why it is the only effective brand. They have leased technology rights to Scent-blocker and Cabelas at various times over the years to use the technology, but it costs those companies a lot of money. That's why Scent-blocker released "Trinity". They got tired of paying royalties. It will be interesting to see if Scent Blocker changes over to activated carbon now that Scent Blocker is owned by Scent Lok.

The reason I mention ScentLok is because they own the exclusive rights to use activated carbon in hunting clothing because they own the US patent for doing so. Prior to ScentLok getting into the scent control garment game there was nothing but field sprays with sodium bicarbonate and they simply don't get the job done in the slightest no matter what the hundreds of commercials state.

Concerning ScentLok coming out with garments in 2017 that are not entirely impregnated with activated carbon, that's true but they are only layering garments. All exterior garments and accessory garments are totally impregnated with activated carbon.

Some of the 2016 and 2017 Nexus under layers only have activated carbon in specific panels where odor is more of an issue. Those same garments do have Gold Alloy which is particles of gold and silver laced throughout the garments and they are natural anti-microbials. I believe that for 2018 SL will have a line of undergarments that are again 100% impregnated with activated carbon (and Gold Alloy) because I know they just came out with a lightweight piece a couple weeks ago.

For the record, I wear merino wool undergarments far more than ScentLok's undergarments and it's strictly because they are more comfortable. Merino wool has qualities that no other fabric does in that it is an insulator when cold out and in a thin layer piece, it keeps you cool when its warm and it does both because of the areas where merino sheep are raised.

No matter the undergarment, I ALWAYS wear ScentLok as my exterior layer. Take that back, in a hard rain I wear Rivers West as an exterior suit because ScentLok doesn't make a descent waterproof suit.

If you listen to JohnE latest podcasts he invokes the Rutgers carbon testing of SL to be able to adsorb up to 96-99% of human scent molecules produced in a 24 hr timeframe....x 10,000.... He also states that they found Blocker only 25% as effective as SL. That being said, SB should more than keep you covered if the science is accurate according to those #'s.
