I see guys doing day hunts with huge packs and wonder to myself what all they're carrying.

Personally, I tend to be somewhat of a minimalist when it comes to packing stuff into the woods. My pack contains my lunch, water bottle, fixed blade knife, small folding saw, drag rope which doubles as tow rope, binos, extra pair of gloves, a spare tab, and a compass. Oh yeah, plus the ever-present cellphone! I'll add a few survival items if I'm hunting very remote areas.

So, what's in your day hunt pack?
 
I have been moderately injured while alone. It's an eye opener.
You should always have a small emergency kit. Mine fits in a small pouch about double the size of an eyeglasses case. I can grab the whole thing and put it in a fanny pack or a backpack and know I have it all.

TP, alcohol wipes, sanitizer, tweezers, whistle, compass, LIGHTER, Chemical Warmers, Ibuprofen, muscle relaxers, gauze, tape, Rite In Rain pad and pen, Flo Orange Marker tape, extra flashlight. I also ALWAYS have a stuffsack Poncho.

I have a decent sized daypack because I carry layers. We have big temp swings here in TN. When it is hot, I can carry a hydration bladder in it. When it is cold, I have extra socks, insulated layers etc. My pack also holds my arrows. In the spring, I can fit Turkey Decoys and a leafy poncho in it.

If I am going to be out all day, I carry a light Hammock rig with me.

It is simpler for me to always use the same pack. Then I know where everything is.

As rifle season gets underway I may carry an extra layer some tp and rain gear. Quiet snacks are good too. It's not often I will need an extra layer in the evening until close to Christmas. If it's cool enough in the morning I will wear the kestrel in and put an extra layer on the back of pack. I also strap my bow to my pack at the tree and make one haul up the tree with the pull-up rope.
If I'm sitting all day I will have extra drinks and a couple peanut butter and honey sandwiches and maybe an apple or two. Sometimes I will take a book to read also.

I guess that's why I save weight everywhere else so I can carry all my other junk.
 
For a morning or evening, headlamp, rangefinder, mask, thermacell(early season), gloves and neck gaiter(cold weather). Rut, add grunt and can call. Phone serves as gps and backup flashlight. Knife in pocket. Bow hooks attached to saddle.

For an all day, add some type of snack, drink, and book.
 
Sent kill spray, call, survival kit, hooks, gps, range finder, knife, lunch, snacks,drink, face paint, most important toilet paper!

Same things but I add calls, rattling bag, more water, warm clothing and PATIENCE.
 
Well, I guess I did leave my grunt tube, rattling bag, headlamp, lighter, and TP off the list of stuff I pack. o_O I make a conscious effort to eliminate the non-essentials and keep the weight down.
 
For me. Mostly cold wx clothing. The bulk takes most of the space.

Range finder, Leatherman, clothing layers depending upon specific hunt, spare cheap black socks (doubles as emergency tp because they still work if wet!) flashlight of some kind, 30' of paracord, 1 cheap strap, different calls, 1 old rope step doubles as a climbing aid or bow / pack holder, zip locks, bandage rap, spare release, spare gloves weather pending, binoculars depending upon location, and always at least one bottle of water. Knife I always carry on myself just incase.

Out of it all the Cheap socks I've used for really random things more than the rest. From cutting the toes out and slipping it over my bulky jacket to keep it out of the bow string. Slipping them over my bow holder to keep it from squeaking in the wind. I've covered my scope when I broke a lense cover, over the end of the barrel in bad storms. Cut the toes off and used them to cover bare skin between my jacket and gloves. List goes on. I go through five to ten pairs a season. Scent free wash and into a zip lock.

Since the 2009 -10 season I've been using the Primos Bowhunting Vest. It's perfect for carrying all the thing I may need during at hunt. It comforting to know that when I put my vest on I won't be forgetting anything. And, the zippered pockets makes it hard to lose items.

I like the vest. That little bottle of repel 100 was my go to bug juice for hunting. It was just windy enough yesterday the thermacell wasn't working and I was wishing I had that little bottle in my pack.

This season I have repurposed an old turkey hunting vest and will use it during archery deer season. Like WHW said above, lots of pockets.

Just picked up a used badlands reactor. Inside is a thermacell, petzle e-lite, bow rope, range finder, emergency aider, small lighter, and some tp. My harness, sitdrag, and tether also go in. Lw stick with platform and aider strapped to the outside.

I used it for the first time last night and liked it much better than my badlands superday pack. It has a much smaller presence once in the tree.
