Has anyone really gave this a try and had success with it?

For those who aren't familiar; it is a website which allows you to find your property, place where your cameras are and upload pictures of the deer/bucks you see and want to kill. It then pools all the information from the time stamps as well as weather/moon phase from that day to profile and pattern certain bucks we're after. It then gives you the most common scenario that the deer has been seen throughout all the pictures you have upload of them to give you the best idea of when he will be around. Interesting idea..

It sounds cool however my years in the woods and hunting several brusiers (currently have 2 that have eluded me for 3 seasons now) that you can pattern and pattern but some are just so smart. They have a sixth sense so I am skeptical it will work. But hey it could also help maybe I am missing something that this could help with.

I looked at the cost for membership and its kinda pricey for what I could just do myself. It would require more work on my part but im a hunter thats what I do.

Yeah i do agree, it is pretty pricey

I mean it is cool and does take the work out of it and it could prove itself. I remember hearing about the coffman buck and read the story. I remember reading that he did not even know that buck existed so I kind of have some skepticism about the Deerlab software helping him. I could be wrong as I read about that awhile ago.

Just seeing this post. If you have any questions about DeerLab just let me know. I'm a co-founder and would be glad to help.

So true on the elude part...I'm thinking that in a few years when I finally have the time to hunt the pre to post rut phase I'll be too old to get back in to the places I only get a week to hunt now...Work and family really consume alot of one's life.
Just happy I get to pick off a 2-3 year old offspring of the grand daddies that cruise my area once a year.

Save your money - send ME your hunting property details along with the trail camera pictures to validate the bucks currently on your property and I will tell you when to hunt them. Of course, I'll be hunting it too, but I'd hunt it when you aren't there -- and I'd be sure to tell you when you should ABSOLUTELY NOT to be in the woods (because I'll be there...)

Just kidding.

Trust your instincts. Would the deer head mounted on your wall mean the same to you if you used this? If so, go for it.

Trying to figure out where your bucks move and where they'll be is a big part of hunting it's the fun part of hunting I don't need anybody to tell me where a big buck is going to be because there is no way that they will know. Bucks are individuals just like people.

You're correct, they are individuals and each have their own patterns. That's why DeerLab aggregates data for individual bucks, using your trail camera photos. This can give you a better idea on how they move during specific time frames, weather conditions, etc. Don't get me wrong, you still have to hunt, but it provides a lot more information than just looking at photos.

On a side note if you have photos of a buck last October 9th there's a very good chance he's going to be very close the following year (if he's still alive) give or take a few days from last year's sighting. These are items DeerLab can help you remember. That being said if using trail cameras takes the fun out of hunting then DeerLab definitely isn't a tool you would want to use.

I never said that trail cams take the fun out of hunting I'm just saying that if you do your homework get a topographical map look at all the rubs look at all the scrapes you can pretty much pattern your buck . That's not to say that you're going to harvest him because they do change your patterns. Trail cameras are fun to use I have a few out myself because I never said that that they weren't fun to look at and see what kind of bucks you have in your hunting area.

I've never used Deer lab but have taken a pretty detailed look at what it can do and considered purchasing it. I agree with the gist of what you are saying but think that having visual confirmation of which buck is visiting scrapes/making rubs at a particular time would add a level of detail you can't get by just looking at the location of rubs and scrapes.

I ended up not purchasing it for two reasons:

#1- it seems like you would have to have a large number of cameras scattered all over your property to get any meaningful information.

#2 - the yearly prescription fee, which I assume is partly a function of the online storage of the photos. If a desktop version was offered for a fixed reasonable price, even if I had to use my hard drive or my own cloud drive for storage I would reconsider it.

No problem at all. I completely understand some rather not use a tool like DeerLab. Our service is ideal for those that run numerous cameras (more than 3 or 4), have a hard time remembering what they are seeing, and want more accurate information from their weather station instead of the sensors their cameras are providing (which are usually inaccurate). A lot use DeerLab so they can share their information with others they trust or access their photos from any computer or mobile device.

Not sure if this response was for me or for Apex. I think the tool is an awesome idea I'm just not sure how many cameras you would need to run for it to be effective. I am curious what your thoughts are on this?

Also, have you ever considered offering a version that didn't include the subscription for cloud storage? If that is even possible.

Sorry about that! To use the patterning features it really depends on how large an area you're hunting. Most of our customers have more than 3 or 4 cameras with some customers having over 200 cameras if you can believe that! I personally can't imagine running that many.

We are constantly pushing updates to DeerLab and having it as an online service makes this a lot easier. If this was traditional software we would have to make a version for Macs, PC's, iPhones, Androids, etc. Then everyone would have to update their software when we updated their platform. Having it online allows us to push updates instantaneously to everyone on every platform.
