Saddle Hunting 101 - The Saddle Hunter Podcast

PODCAST? WHAT????? How about a whole series on DIY projects, start with the simple things, SitDrag mods, gear pouches? If you can get John on, he could probably do an entire year on just his scent control routine and activated carbon. Definitely, need to have some guests, I think you should start with the famous host of Saddlepalooza!

This is a good question.

I think it would also be good to discuss how long it takes to get up a tree (say 20-25 feet) and get set up. It currently taking me about an hour from the base of the tree till ready to hunt. Then about 30 mins to get down. This is important if your want to be set up before daylight or get out of the tree before it's it's pitch dark.

Goodness Cajun, an hour to climb and set up? Are you growing the tree first? Joke.....I'm sure the next podcast should help reduce that time.

How are you climbing?

Podcasts are great. But I think a video follow up to what you talk about is even better. For those of us still learning a video showing you setting up your method using the climbing terms shows us what your actually talking about.

As both red and G2 know I've texted them questions to help me get rolling in this. I think a really good price minded set up is what is lacking for newbies like me.

From the outside looking in saddle hunting can seem overwhelming. Talk about simplifying it with a basic list of what you need and why.

What to buy the ups driver for Christmas? You know the one that helps you keep all the new gear coming in hidden from the wife.

What are you doing ? Growing the tree before you hunt it???

Treat him right. I too am a UPS driver.[/QUOTE]

Ha it's funny you ask this! I just gave my UPS driver a $100 Amazon gift card. He's been delivering to me for almost 30 years. That kind of dedication and hard work deserves rewarding!

No, but I'm also not going out and prepping trees in advance. To me that severely limits the choices you have for hunting on the fly.
I have areas picked but I'll move from one tree to another depending on wind, deer movement ect.

Agreed. When you prep a few trees then you sort of feel drawn to them and will likely hunt on even if it isn't ideal. Are you currently using sticks???

Cajun, if you use SRT(Single Rope Technique) you can have a bunch of cheap cord already hanging and you can walk in, pull up your rope and you are done in 10 minutes. Setup as many trees as you can, and you will have a ton of options. Add an XOP hand climber and you can climb any tree that a normal tree climber can use.

No sir I'm using spurs. That way theres pretty much no limitations for where or when I can go to a different tree.

Bingo! Keep it fresh! Keep them guessing! I hate seeing the same thing over and over! I don’t know how some guys sit in the same stand all the time, looking at the same feeder or down the same pipeline. Sure putting in the time is effective and eventually something will cross the 300 yard shooting lane, but man, it just ain’t for me!

As an example, this past weekend I hunted a spot off a creek where I knew deer were crossing about 20 yrds up wind from me. The day I climbed that tree to hunt I noticed they had just started crossing another spot behind me because the water level had gone down. So the next day I backed up about 50 yrds and hunted down wind of the new spot. So happened a doe literally came running and sliding in down the steep creek bank for a drink like nothing I had ever imagined. She came in so fast I had no chance to get my bow from the other side of the tree without her busting me. Then she took off as fast as she came in and right behind her comes a nice 9 point sliding down the bank exactly the same way and then took off chasing after her again. This all happened about 5 mins after I got up in the tree so I just wasn't ready.

If I would have had to stick to the first tree because I had prepped it I would have never seen all this or had any chance.
