No experience with the previous models or Solo but I bought the new Tactacam 6 on some kind of release sale at Cabela’s and I did it mainly as a shot confirmation unit, mounted to my stabilizer and I also have a clamp mount. Yes, I wanted to capture my hunts for memory’s sake, but it’s not a primary cam for storytelling purposes. As a tracking tool prior, during, after shot, it’s been invaluable. when I wasn’t 100% confident in my shot on a doe this year it allowed me and my wife to slow the shot down frame by frame to confirm I’d be tracking a very dead deer. Same with the fiasco on a buck I just shot and put Tactacam freeze-frames in the Live from the Saddle thread. I put three pics in the thread that seemed to confirm I’d be tracking a very dead deer based on shot…well, it SHOULD have been a very dead deer but he was tougher than we expected. Shot was right on the money based on Tactacam’s help, and when I found him the next day the entry wound and internal damage confirmed my tactacam’s footage. He just happened to be sturdy enough to run 300 yards with half an arrow through both lungs!
I do recommend getting a remote control. It helps to cut down on extra hand movements, because reaching down to the actual camera button can get you busted (if we’re talking negatives at all). Another recommendation is to be under-confident in your battery life: if you record in highest quality and/or the “shot” takes longer to record and execute than expected, you could end up with a dead battery before a dead deer. Charge after every 20-30m of recording time or carry a spare battery.
