Deep South early season

I hunt middle AL and GA. During early season I bring an extra T shirt in a ziplock bag. Once I am settled in the tree and cooled off, i take off the sweat soaked shirt, put on the dry one and stick the wet shirt in the ziplock bag in my pack.

Oh and Deet wipeons or a thermacell are required! Good hunting!
 
I will keep saying this… it is not the amount of times you hunt, but the quality of those times that matters. Just because the season is open doesn’t mean you should or have to hunt. I only hunt if it is below 60. That means no mosquitos and sweat and a much more pleasant experience. Give me just 5 great days in the woods during the season over hunting every day.

problem down here is we will have to wait until the end of January sometimes to get below 60 (bit of an exaggeration), but seriously, its not uncommon for us to be 60+ the majority of the season

Which is why 95% of the deer I’ve killled in La the last 12 seasons have been after December 15th. Most of them after Christmas

Very true, I’ve been in 80 on Christmas Day before. I’ve also been in 18 on Christmas Day it just depends. And on the point of quality over quantity I’d say it doesn’t matter either way, if I’m in the woods more and doing the right things I have and will see and kill more deer. I’ve said before I’ve always filled majority of not all my tags before thanksgiving but I’m also in the woods vastly more so in October and early Nov.
 
I can say this - I ain’t wading through no swamps to my spots until it’s consistently below 65F!!!

I fully support folks who won't hunt until it gets below 60 degrees for a high. The more the better in my book. Who am I to say they should be out in the woods when it is hot. I also love folks who would rather watch a ballgame on the couch in the AC on the weekend instead of going to the woods. Any reason or justification folks can find to stay home instead of being out pressuring the deer I am trying to hunt; I am in full support of. As for me, the day it becomes legal to hunt deer, I plan to be after them until it isn't legal to hunt them again.

October is usually the best month of hunting for me. I mainly hunt evenings.

I like make the majority of the trek in gym shorts and t shirt. Strip down. ( I’m sure if anyone saw they would be confused and concerned) Wipe down. Get suited up. Spray down and SLOWLY slip into my spot. I use scent boot powder and deodorant (especially in the swamp area you will create). I also use a drag rag. I want to try the conquest ever calm this season.

I can be a little neurotic about scent control. Big Eberhart guy.

Hydration - I’m trying a small bladder instead of a Nalgene. The Nalgene can be loud and I have dropped them from a tree. I always add some kind of electrolyte to it.

Bugs- I am pretty covered up. I grew up duck hunting in SW LA so I’m used to those hot early morning buzzing teal hunts.

Biggest thing at least for me is to pace yourself! Hunt hard and smart those first couple of weeks of October. Then ease off until mid to late December.

I’ll take off for the LSU Vs. Auburn game. Hopefully I can get the buck I started chasing last season by then. Otherwise I’ll be glued to my phone waiting for trail cam pictures. #GeauxTigers

I'm also a big Eberhart guy. ScentLock lives in totes in my car and I'm dressing at the tree. The struggle is real for managing perspiration/odor for early season!
 
So I have one question and how you guys might approach this. There is a really marshy area that’s open for hunting State archery season, but you can only hunt up until noon. Do you guys think it would at all be worth trying to hunt during the early season? I don’t have many pre-worked spots, but I was thinking I could walk in early around 8 AM and maybe set up on a good feed tree or even just on the edge where the woods meet the marsh and try my luck? Or just throw some morning scouts to find hot sign and just develop my game plan from there?

They are def gonna be on any of the higher ground in there and near feed trees. The edges would work too...if the property is close enough to you and with that time frame, i would scout it quickly one morning as soon as i could see and get out and then come back with the right conditions, unless during that time you happen to find burning hot sign and didnt jump any deer going in. Another good idea would be an observation sit on the edge to see how\when the deer are working through there.

So, you can only hunt to noon? Can you scout all day? If so, I would scout out a couple of spots with feed trees for morning hunts, and then go hunt them until about noon. Then come out, drop off the bow, and go scout out a spot in the afternoon for the next morning. Maybe even hang a preset for the AM if you think that is feasible.
 
Do y’all use snow shoes in marshes? Talking about terrain with floatilla whatever crap. I had a pair I bought that basically broke as soon as I tried using them, wondering if investing in a nice Milsurp pair would be necessary/worthwhile

No but back years ago there was a mud attachment you could add to your boots. Sorta same premise as snow shoes but for mud. No idea if they are still around.
