We got a late start in the afternoon. We walked the trail to where the public meets a private field. We could hear hens out in the field soon as we got to the area we were gonna set up so popped a squat real quick. 1 of the hens disappeared and the other walked up and stared us down at 15yds....eventually she was content all is well and walked by us oblivious to us......after the hen walked by we sat and watched the swamp bottom. the sun was starting to set and we made 1 final call and he gobbled maybe 100yds out. He gobbled 3 more times as he made his way toward us. We caught sight of him while he was still on the private field. He crossed the fence and started our way. He was about 30yds when I shot. Lots of vines and sticks in the way but it made it throu and he dropped on the spot.

1710764612939.jpegStill a few weeks out before I can go after them but I ran across him with 8 hens the other day below my house. This year, numbers in my area seem to be up. I am thinking about taking my black powder shotgun out after one this year. I would be smitten if I ran into this guy

The one I would be using is an Italian made F.lli Pietta Gussago SxS cap. Being a big flintlock guy I have been looking for a Fowler, but @Red Beard convinced me not to spend any money this year on guns and my wife is holding me too it. Maybe next year if I find one I like.

That is perrrttyyy! I have a similar gun but cheaper and made by navy arms. Only difference is my barrels are brown.

Red Beard actually told me the other day he changed his mind and it was okay for you to buy a muzzleloading shotgun hehe

Anyone use a chair while bow hunting them? I don’t plan on using blind to be somewhat mobile but looking into something like this to elevate me a little bit to be able to draw on them

Funny you mention this. Just got one of these (rebranded) as part of my ghost blind package. I thought it would be way too low to the ground to operate a bow but it's turned out to be amazing with a longbow. I'll caveat by saying that the ghost blind provides total concealment for me to shift around and into position prior to the shot.

I use the Waldrop Pac Seat (standard size) for bowhunting turkeys within and without a blind.
I had thought if I used my bow for turkey and just used my saddle with my feet on the ground I could make it work for a long sit for turkey. Just need to be high enough in some areas to be shooting above the field edge brush and grass about 2-3 high. Seems like a simple and lightweight option vs sitting on the ground or bringing a chair. Has anyone done this and is it limiting vs a ground seat?

I’d be interested in how this works! figured I’d just strap the chair to bottom of my pack anyways.

I have a dryad mini so all I would need is a belt on to carry it in on and my tether, not even a need for leg straps. I can’t see it being limiting enough to make carrying a chair in worth my time and effort for a quick seat. I will still have my turkey vest to carry my decoys with seat for a ground sit if I don’t have a tree. I usually just face it backwards and kneel on my seat to shoot my bow. To add the mini and a tether to the setup might open up a few options for almost no weight penalty.

Rogers had some Remington tss on sale so I grabbed a few boxes to try and I also ordered a .575 Trulock choke. I’ve been using Apex 9s and a Carlson .555, but my patterns have never been the best at 40yards. Or atleast not as good as others are shooting! I was thinking maybe it’s getting blown out. I can’t wait to do some tinkering in the next week or two.
