Well it’s that time of year again and I don’t have a cultipacker. Looking on craigslist it seems worn out ones are $500 and up and have to be drug around. I have a small tractor, so an 8ft was going to be on the big side and past experience using my dad’s tow behind had its short comings in tight areas. I decided to build my own. I found a source for the wheels, and things just started coming together. I drew up some plans and started ordering steel and misc parts and tracking down larger steel items from local sources.

These end plates were laser cut and sourced out of state. I had my initials cut into them while I was at it.
You can also see some of the mounting tabs for the 3pnt connection. I just didn’t have a good way to drill holes of this size, so it made sense to outsource those to the laser cutter as well.

Here's a pic of it starting to take shape. I have a mig 135 welder, so I was able to tack things in place. This is made from ¼” and ½” steel, so a bigger welder is needed for final welding. Im also adding a tongue option in case I use a 4 wheeler or similar to tow it around.

Bearings arrived and all holes lined up perfect.

Before I tacked the ½” thick end plates on the main tube, I filled it with used wheel weights I had from another project.

Took it over to a friends and used his welder to finish up the welding.

The axle to bearing fit was surprisingly tight, so I had to take some sandpaper and give it a good polishing. Axle is 1.75” solid cold rolled steel.

Finished it off with Rustoleum primer and paint. Not an exact match to the tractor, but close enough.

This project isn’t for everyone. I didn’t save much doing it myself, since I wasn’t buying steel in bulk quantities like companies that make these. However it was nice to get to weld/fabricate again, as building things is what I really enjoy doing.

Well done! I still drag around my old one but that one looks sweet!
