    Teach me to fish

Ike jime is the Japanese term for using a spike to quickly destroy a fish's brain, killing it humanely. The bloodline in a trout is a dark red vessel that runs along the spine. It can spoil quickly, painting the meat, so use a spoon (or your thumbnail) to scrape it out, then rinse the carcass...

Safety thoughts on using a hasty harness?

Reminds me of the Swiss seats we used at Scout camp. Good technique to know, but I'm having trouble imagining a scenario where I'd have the right lengths of webbing but no saddle or RCH.

    Teach me to fish

Fish are slippery and slimy. A glove helps; I keep a cut-resistant butcher's glove in my tackle box. Forceps or needle nose pliers help getting the hook out of the mouth. If you don't have a livewell, use a stringer, or, preferably, a basket, to keep the fish alive while fishing. The...

Jokes and Memes - NO POLITICS

I drove wreckers for some time in my early 20s. We had a driver that really had heartache about having passengers ride in the truck with him. So, AAA sends him to help out a couple of little old ladies who broke down on the highway. He convinced them that it was too dangerous to get out of a...

is there a way to tie the soft stiched hitch on your bridge?

I should probably take a picture, but I'll try to describe my solution. I tie the tag end of my bridge to my bridge loop, so it can't dangle or catch on stuff. I decided I don't want to be able to pull the bridge all the way out, I tied a figure-8 between the friction hitch and the terminal...

    Pack in / haul out

I used some scrap PVC or PEX, about 1/2". I like it, but I think I'd use brake like if I were to do it again.

is there a way to tie the soft stiched hitch on your bridge?

As easy to tie onto a bridge as it is to tie onto a carabiner. I went with a Knut as it's more compact, though. And @Brocky recommended it. Will be trying it out once the rain stops next week.

    Pack in / haul out

In MN we have to bring the entire carcass (less entrails) out of the woods with us - it's illegal to dispose of any part of a carcass on public land. I generally prefer to drag the deer out in a toboggan. I have my kill kit in a fanny pack at the bottom of my pack, so I can head back to the...

What’s your preferred bridge adjustment side?

Both. I use 2 bridges, mirroring each other. I generally climb on the bridge that adjusts on my right and hang from the bridge that adjusts on my left. Since I'm more likely to rotate left than right, I don't want to risk accidentally tending my friction hitch when I do so. Also set your...

    Is Tuebor Out Of Business?

I think so. I was interested in one of their saddles last year and somehow concluded they had shut down.

Scary or Weird Experience while hunting.

Varusteleka is a Finnish milsurp (and new manufacture) company, a bit like a European version of what Sportsmans Guide was in the 90s. Their social media game is pretty good, and they sponsor a really impressive winter 2-gun competition called Finnish Brutality. Lots of jokes about this piece...

Smart watches. Let's talk about em.

It took my finger a while to get used to wearing a wedding ring. It was really awkward on our honeymoon when I developed chafing under my new ring - "no, I swear, I'm not allergic to my wedding ring!". Chafing cleared up in a week or so, lotion helped. I don't wear my smartwatch in the shower...

    Gear you liked/disliked 2023

I generally go the opposite, layers in my pack until I've been stationary for a bit. I overheat easily, get sweaty, get all my layers wet, and then I stay cold. I find I get better results if I wait to layer until I get a bit chilled.

Scary or Weird Experience while hunting.

A lot of Finns in the UP. From what I understand, there's something of an enduring tradition among Finnish conscript soldiers on winter field exercises. Apparently the instructors mentor their charges in the proper military procedure to use issued military cutlery to turn ordinary firewood...

    Stickbow pull up strategies

I replaced the ribbon on my leash with Dynaglide, the 40' kit from EWO spooled right on. It is pretty thin, but I only haul my bow up on it - packs comes up on my rappel line. After I rappel I use it to retrieve my rope.

    New to eyeglass -need advise

My current eye doctor is an Army Reserve officer, with taxidermy on the wall. My last eye doctor also had a bunch of taxidermy on the wall. So, I was pretty comfortable broaching the topic of shooting glasses with them. Mind you, I got Lasik 15 years ago in my 30s; now that I'm in my very...

    Favorite shrink tubing?

I generally just get whatever they have at Menards or Ace. I think it's Gardner Bender. Heavy-duty adhesive-lined is my preference. But I also have a few of the Hyper Tough kits from Walmart and they work just fine. If you're heat-shrinking the ends of ropes, I use an "overkill whipping"...
