    Why saddle vs hang on

This is my first year and I've only done two sits so far but I like it a lot. I've got to work on my off side shooting with my recurve though. Too much quick movement for these highly pressured long island deer. Once I learn how to slow it down a little on my platform it will be great. Been...

    Hunting edge?

Where I hunt we don't have any U's but we do have L's where the buck will walk along the outside edge of cover. Far enough where the walking is easier but close enough where to hops has them in the cover which is usually thick laurels. I'll hunt the inside edge of that L since the deer here on...

    Hunting edge?

Exactly Tom. I imagine the wind being like water when it hits the edge, which way will it go nobody knows without using something that will give you visual clues like seed pods, yarn threads etc. I like to set up on the inside of the edge at a turn if possible.

    Trad recurve kill

Great job, those close shots are much harder for me than the 15 - 18 yard shots. Any deer with trad is a big thrill.

    Platform or Steps

This is my first year but I really like the EOP with Ernie's modification. I think while it is prime time I will be a leaner and other times will probably alternate between sitting and leaning.

    Trail cams and public lands.

On long Island I believe hunters steal you stuff for intimidation purposes. they think they own that piece of public land and they don't want you there. That's why I bought a saddle, nobody will know where I'm hunting now. I use lock boxes and put them in thick areas or other areas most hunters...

    Cedar Swamp Setup Help

I would do the following: First I would buy OnX Maps and go through and mark off all the high spots, beds and rubs I could find. then I would mark trails leading to those spots and do some trim work on the trails making it easier for the deer to go through. then I would fine suitable trees...

    Tree Stand Packs

I have a Bison gear Fanny pack with straps that used when carrying in my stand and sticks. I'm thinking it will work perfectly now with my kestrel and sticks. Really looking forward to a lighter load even though my stand sites are less than a mile in and most around a 1/4 mile.

    Books on trees?

I have the Audubon book and I like it a lot. always have it in my truck. One thing to look out for is that red oaks and pin oaks can cross and then you will get a tree that can look like both and really stump you on identification.

Shot opportunities on mature buck per season

I'd say one to two a year within 25 yards and another two within 35 yards. I hunt about 25 days a year from Oct 1st thru Jan 31st.

    Need advice on set up

I went and tried out the above suggestions this Sunday and finally was able to try out my XOP platform with Ernie's kit and everything worked great. Plan on practicing every Sunday for a little bit until hunting season.

    Any trad guys here?

I've only ever shot trad and I started in 1990 with a MR Hamilton Scorpion Longbow. I mostly shoot my Palmer Recurve now days but am itching to shoot the longbow again. Got my kestrel a couple of months ago and am just now getting into a tree with it. Great to hear that it is suitable for trad...

    how comfortable

great thread and points guys. I'm new to saddle hunting and looking forward to it. The hang on stands I've had have been uncomfortable after a couple of hours so I basically stand most of the time. I figure I'll be doing a lot of leaning with some sitting thrown in. I've never used a real ladder...
