    Learning from Saddle Hunting Accidents

@Ballshooter thanks. I'm 61 and have a lot to learn. Thankfully I am retired and in good health so I can practice a lot. 2TC is something I aspire to learn at some point. The gear is so light and you can splurge on a larger platform if you want. I'll just have to see how I do. I have a one stick...

    Learning from Saddle Hunting Accidents

Great advice! I have poles in my basement that support a beam and I could start there for sure. I have a set of ladder sticks I plan to put on a tree out behind my house where I can practice at low height as well. Before the season starts I can move the ladder sticks to one of my favorite...

    Learning from Saddle Hunting Accidents

I reached out to @always89y requesting to be notified if a meeting is organized. He's only an hour and a half away in Knoxville it appears. Oh, I like the idea of one sticking because it's less weight and you can climb higher than with 3 - 4 sticks. Sometimes I need to get to 30 ft to get...

I enjoyed watching this cordial exchange of views and learned from it. Thank you both for taking the time to comment.

    Learning from Saddle Hunting Accidents

I've watched a few 2tc videos and it does look to be very light weight and efficient. And there's not much tether slack it seems. I thought it might be harder to learn. I'll take a look at some more videos. Those I've bothered to watch so far were not done so well.

Thank you for the welcome and the offer to advise. Thank you. I am in Kingsport. I like the idea of building in some redundancy and plan to do that as well.

    Learning from Saddle Hunting Accidents

Thanks for the offer to meet! I am in Kingsport (Tri-Cities) and you are just under 3 hours away depending on Knoxville traffic. I may reach out at some point if you don't mind showing a newbie the ropes!

    Learning from Saddle Hunting Accidents

Yes, I use the harness from the ground up when using my climber. And yes, I either have to climb limbless trees or trim smaller branches. I like that you can go around limbs using a lineman's belt and tether when saddle hunting and look forward to perfecting that skill. I also put climbing...

Thank you. Moving the tether is something I was thinking about as well and your response gives me confidence to know that at least one person is successfully climbing that way. You all are really helpful.

    3. Eastern Woods Outdoors - Ultimate Lower Step

Thank you! I plan to practice at low height for sure. I have checked the map and there are three saddle hunters within 25 miles of me so I will reach out soon.

    3. Eastern Woods Outdoors - Ultimate Lower Step

Amen. I've seen many videos where tethers get a lot slack when folks are one sticking. I will likely use my lineman's belt to try to limit the potential for a long fall before the tether catches me. I haven't one sticked yet so I don't know exactly how I will manage this but it is one of my...

    3. Eastern Woods Outdoors - Ultimate Lower Step

Another helpful answer from @Bigterp! So you find an 18" stick to be more stable than a shorter stick. I can see that being the case. I watched a Staggs in the Wild video where he liked a 12" stick and I have seen others using a 12". It seems to me you would be giving up a little climbing...

    3. Eastern Woods Outdoors - Ultimate Lower Step

Thank you @Bigterp. I use a ladder stand or my Summit Viper climbing stand now. A friend gave me a 20' stick ladder that I plan to assemble on a tree behind my house. I will then buy a saddle, lineman's belt and tether and just practice climbing the ladder using the belt and practice hanging...

    3. Eastern Woods Outdoors - Ultimate Lower Step

I am brand new to the forum and haven't purchased the first piece of saddle hunting equipment yet. My goal is to be ready to one-stick and saddle hunt this fall. I've been watching tons of videos and am about to make some purchases. Eastern Woods Outdoors markets an "Ultimate Lower Step" for...

    Learning from Saddle Hunting Accidents

Thank you, @Weldabeast. I'm okay with risking bumps and bruises. The falls are what concern me. If you know specifically what the user did wrong or how equipment was misused, that would be helpful to know so I don't make the same mistakes. Thanks again.

    Learning from Saddle Hunting Accidents

Greetings Saddle Hunters. I'm a new member but not a saddle hunter yet. I'm 61 years old and in decent shape. I love my Summit Viper but am getting tired of hauling it and all my gear into the woods. I don't see this getting any easier as I age. I want to try saddle hunting while I am young...
