    Michigan SH public land challenge.

Im an open book on the PRC, happy to share everything I know about it. A good friend was one of the founding members of the advisory council that was set up when the forest unit was created in the early 70's to kind of look after the area and make management recommendations to the DNR. I...

    Michigan SH public land challenge.

I've done both, mostly boondock. Depends who is camping with me and their tolerance for pooping in the woods. Some of the state forest campground see seasonably heavy use, others are almost always empty when I drive through. The tricky part about using the state forest campgrounds for...

Shout out somebody that helped you get started!

Not sure who first introduced me to saddle hunting, probably Eberhart on a podcast, but it was this forum that really made it happen. Hat tip to @boyne bowhunter for taking the time to meet up and show me what one sticking was all about.

    Michigan SH public land challenge.

Yeah, I kinda grew up in there. Its not what it used to be, even now vs 10 years ago, as far as having that "big wild" feeling when you're tromping through the woods. I stopped hunting there around 5 years ago, but still spend a fair bit of time there hiking, fishing, etc. Good place for a...

I'm down. I'd recommend the Pigeon River Country State Forest. I've hosted deer and trout camps there for years, could recommend a few locations for camp.

Michigan meet up May 11th @Sleepy Holliw State Park, 11 A.M.

Thank you guys for the invitation, I would really love to go down and meet everyone. My son has an apartment pretty close to there so I'd have a great excuse to go visit him and crash on his couch. I won't be able to make this one, though. My son is actually coming up that day to spend some...

    Curious about snow movement

I really like the two days before the snow hits. I find that when I wait till just before or during, the deer are often already hunkered down. Lots of variables here, but just my general observation.

Brick and Mortar Saddle Hunting Stores

That's too bad. Always hate to see a business close it's doors, but especially mom and pop outdoors related businesses.

Brick and Mortar Saddle Hunting Stores

I'd be surprised if Beyond the Ears didn't have any saddle stuff. Not sure where you're at in SE MI, but Jays Sporting Goods in Clare might not be too far of a drive*. *I'm up in the tip of the mitt and everything south of bay city and east of 127 is SE MI to me.

    bridge - Rope vs Amsteel

I'm a big fan of adjustable webbing bridges. They're strong, slide well through the 'biner and are super easy to adjust.

I'm still thinking I'm done for the year, though I may get out once or twice more to do some early spring scouting. We are having some unseasonably warm weather in northern Michigan, snow is gone in a lot of places and it feels wrong not to take advantage of it tonsee what I can learn for next...

    Go to stealth strip pattern?

I went with the smoke on my one stick, blends in pretty well. If I had to pick only one, though, I'd go with strata.

    Ball compass unreliability

I'm gonna say the thing you're never supposed to say :D. I don't carry a compass anymore, took it out of my pack for the first time in 20 years before this season. My phone works just fine and since I started using my phone to navigate 6 years ago, I've never had an issue with a battery dying...

Spartan Forge Platform Now Offers LIDAR

I have the caltopo pro and that feature looks the same as the free. I caved and downloaded spartan forge this year. I actually really like it. As a hillcountry hunter, I'm not ready to dump caltopo but I won't renew the pro version next year, just going to run the free. This was my first...

Well, the snow didn't bring the movement I was hoping for, but it brought enough for me to get two doe's this morning. Still hunted my way downwind of a good doe bedding area. Found a tree and was barely set up when the first one popped over the next ridge over at about 75yds. While it was...
