Ameristep strap on step recall information

Michbowhunter said:
I don't understand why a company has not come out with something like these as there seems to be a high demand for these steps.

I had some but sold them because I couldn't get them tight enough on the tree.

There is high demand for them within this community because we use them for platforms, but outside of this community they are nearly obsolete. It's also a pretty high risk venture...if one person falls and sues, you're screwed. If you get a batch of bad steps (like Ameristep did) you're screwed. That's way too much risk for too small of a market.

Also there are the cranford rope steps, which serve the purpose of a strap on step for everyone else, but not us who are looking to use them for a platform. We are still holding out on 2 commercial options that have been in the works but I have not heard much on them recently.

Are all 08 steps recalled or just those dated 12/08? I have some dated 04/08 so I am trying to find the correct answer. The links above have different answers. I have a hard time believing that a whole years worth of production is bad?

I thought they just had 2 numbers, i.e. "08" or "05"

There is an arrow between the 0 and 8 that points to the month.

Look at that, you learn something new everyday.

Yea I see what you mean about conflicting info. Once says stamped with 12/08 and the other says it was sold from April through Nov. 2009. I don't know.

i found some more information.
On the CPSC page there is a note that the recall was expanded on two different days. May of 2010 and October of 2010. The october 2010 is written below. I guess I have some recall steps. I bought them about 4-5 years ago and I wonder if the guy that sold them to me knew they were recalled. that sucks. I really didn't want to have to buy more at todays inflated prices. Looks like I have even more motivation to try that Helium stick idea that you had.

Units: About 40,000 (In January and May 2010 releases #10-101 with 16,000 products, and #10-236 with an additional 1,800 recalled steps, bringing the total to 17,800, included date codes 12/08 and 10/08, December 2008 and October 2008 respectively). All steps that include a "08" date code are being added to the recall, adding 22,000 units.

Using these things at 20 percent of your body weight. ( roughly the percentage when hunting in a saddle, I personally find it highly unlikely that we will break these things. JMO

Yeah, I'm not encouraging anyone to take unnecessary risks. But I've thought the same thing about using the discontinued steps as part of a platform. I'm tethered at that point and even when I push away to draw and shoot, I can't imagine I'm putting the weight on one of these that someone climbing would. When you climb you have nearly 100% of your weight on a step at points.

I will be screwing in my platform whenever possible from now on. Save the Ameristeps for a PA public land hunt. But no more on my run and gun hunts with a bow. I'd rather take more time and have a quiet, stable base than to save a few minutes and then spook a deer when it is in range.

Yeah I was thinking about that. I put full weight on them when adjusting my tether, but I am fully secured at that point. I am moving to a static line and srt for climbing, and will most likely continue to use them.

I have however been going back to the Cranford t- step lately for my platform. Those things are like standing on a concrete foundation

Unless of course you are cursed by the same innate force that seemingly forces you to cling to all of your saddle hunting gear as if it were made of gold or platinum

...says the guy who would cling to his Buckingham spikes just as tightly.

huck.. had to delete your post. Can't have anyone knowingly selling/buying the recalled steps through the site. Nothing against you.

Red I didn't even think about that. My apologies :?

That's right Mausty. I have this invisible guy tugging at me every time I start to rid myself of anything related to my saddle hunting. Ridiculous isn't it? I do intend to sell off some things during the off season, but it will not be the buckinghams

Don't worry about it! Safety first!

And I also have trouble getting rid of any saddle stuff. I buy, but I don't sell lol

I can't even find my recall steps. I promised them here for someone to use as a mold for a DIY. I figured I would come across them but I haven't.

Somewhere I have two and I hope they aren't rigged up!
