Are you using electronic ear protection/ sound enhancer?

I have two pairs of Walker Razors, one is rechargeable and one just uses AAs. I use them during gun season and find them to work really well; so well in fact I had to stop wearing them in the rain cuz the amplified sound of falling rain puts me to sleep. They last quite awhile on AAs, the rechargeable pair don’t last quite as long. I put my son in the second pair and with the volume set at half we can carry on a conversation at a whisper sitting side by side.

I have the Walker Silencer 2.0 earbuds and directional hearing is really good with them. I wear them duck and goose hunting where directional hearing is a must.

Howard Leight impact sport goes with me in both the deer woods gun season and the turkey blind. Not many things rattle your cage harder than a shotgun inside of a blind. I got hearing aids last year, and the only thing I miss with the muff over the hearing aids is your directional hearing is off a little bit.

Anyone tried those Surefire EP-4? Not electronic. But small opening so you can hear most stuff. Will dampen most of the noise.
At 15-16$ a shot seems like an economical way to go maybe.

I use those in my shop (with bone conduction headphones) when running power equipment or shooting handgun outside if I’m wearing a heavy cap in the cold and can’t wear muffs. They work fine, they’re comfortable, with the caps open you can still hear pretty good. It wouldn’t be the worst for a single shot of centerfire rifle or shotgun, certainly better than foam plugs. If you close the caps it would be fine for duck hunting.

That's all I am really looking for. Something to quiet down one, maybe two shoots in the woods. I want some protection for the kids as well. So thinking about getting a few sets. If I have time I can put the caps on. If it comes up quick, I am not worried about making the shot and have my ears ring for an hour. One shot with a shotgun isn't bad in the woods. 450 makes a little more noise. I can take some muffs if I am gonna be in a blind where their is some more echo.

I’m concerned about the active ones that amplify sound but shut off at a loud noise.

What if they malfunction and don’t turn off and magnify the blast?

My understanding is they don’t shut off from loud sounds but block(to a degree) all sounds and repeat the sound through a speaker with limited output capacity.

That's the way I've heard it described before. May not be a great analogy but sort of like watching shooting videos on a laptop. The volume can be turned up but the speakers don't have the ability to replicate the sound intensity of an actual gun shot
.

Ok

This is making me feel better

I was afraid they were like binoculars that turned off when you look into the Sun

I have and use them regularly, but always under muffs, on the range. Never tried using them solo.

These things are so small, and black, that they will disappear if you drop them. I gutted some orange paracord and milked the lanyard through it so I can find the durn thing next time I drop it. Also you might put a dot of adhesive on the prong that goes into the silicone to prevent it pulling out, I've had that happen once. Maybe RTV or similar flexible silicone adhesive.

I see they sell them in orange. My concern was dropping one out of the tree.

Girth hitch the lanyard on a small rare earth magnet or other bit of steel. Put a magnet on your pullup line so you can fish for it if need be. Also if you're wearing a button-down you can girth hitch the lanyard to your top buttonhole so you keep it with you.
