Base Layers

Lhasa Apso, they're from tibet. I know he's insullated well because it's impossible to get the little bugger inside once it snows.
Poodles are very similar to wool. They, like sheep, do not shed. There are poodle sweaters (no, not foo foo poodles, I mean the ones that hunt)

I know. My wife keeps telling me no more hunting dogs unless it's a poodle. But little does she know once my lab is gone there's a boykin spaniel in her future.

I already have too many hobbies, so both raising Alpacas and buying Poodles are out. I'm sure both insulate, however wind is the biggest issue for me. This morning I used a light base layer with the Minus 33 Merino heavy and the Scentlok Timberfleece suit. I'm good with this setup down to about 20 with zero wind. Zero. But when the sun comes up here the wind blows. I've been leaning towards a windproof Vortex or Coldblooded suit, but the right midlayer might do it. @d_rek , you mentioned a midwieght/windproof fleece .. anything specific you recommend?

I just picked up a few things....Cabela's Wooltimate Hybrid jacket which is berber fleece/windstop on the sleeves and body plus wool on the body. By itself, the arms aren't super warm...but when it is colder I can put on a fleece I got from REI that also has some windstop and it is really good (Merino underneath).

I also got a KUIU Teton Insulated (synthetic insulation) jacket that I LOVE. It can be worn over or under the Wooltimate Hybrid jacket. It is probably warmer under the Wooltimate.
I have to be sitting still to wear the Teton. I was out shooting in it in 20 with no sun with just a T Shirt under and I got overheated walking to and from my targets.

Scentlok wind proof works quite well, but you could get away with any brand of outdoor clothing that has a wind proof membrane. I have a few Scentlok wind proof items and have heard good things about Sitka and cabelas wind proof as well. The Scentlok stuff is popping up on camofire.com just about every other day right now so might want to subscribe to their app to catch the deal.

Those both look like they could do it. I just read the KUIU story a few days ago. The backcountry and mountain style it's geared toward made me think it might be a little light for just hanging in cold weather. You think it's warm enough for saddle sits?

@d_rek
I do have the Vortex vest I picked up last year on clearance and it helps where it covers. I killed the camofire app because it wouldn't stop sending updates, but i try to check the website often. I'll see whats there now.

Thanks guys

Because wind proof doesn't breath much or at all it tends to insulate a little better so you don't need as much bulk. I wouldn't shy away from something that's more geared towards back country application.

For sitting, you need the insulation layer. I have some relatively quiet snow pants and I have the Wooltimate pants which are extremely warm.

Kuiu has insulated pants as a layer

I love a Boykin. I almost got one until I read up on Wire Haired Pointing Griffons. I had already put a deposit on a Boykin but then the litter didn't have enough males for my spot on the waiting list. I was actually relieved b/c by the time the pups came I really wanted the WPG. Mine rocks. He is the most loyal dog I know. And from 9 months old I could have walked him on 'heal' with no leash down a sidewalk with dogs fighting on one side and steaks lining the other side, and he would not have moved off of 'heal'. Great nose too. the only down side is that it takes him a bird or two to realize we are hunting and not hiking. I'd like a little more prey instinct - which apparently most WPG's have. Maybe mine is too spoiled because I walk him in the woods often but don't get to hunt him so much.
He and I will be out in the yak/canoe duck hunting for the first time this year (he is 2). We'll see how that goes.

How do WPG do with the cold water of late season duck hunting?
