"Big woods scouting"

Correct, going in deep enough that coming back out would be more energy/work than worth. Miles well make it a couple days. Set up a spike camp in an area back off the intended area to hunt far enough back to not effect movement.

You're in PA right? Can you legally do that in PA? I'm looking for somewhere to do it but I can't in nj. I know I can in ny state forests.

I'm also seriously considering backpacking in for next rifle opener here in Missouri. Its perfectly legal as far as I can tell. Southern Missouri has 7 different wilderness areas and the smallest one is over 4000 acres. My wife and I have backpacked some in them and I think there is potential! We jumped a nice buck last summer a ways back in on one
trip. My saddle will mean I go in a lot lighter for sure!
Would love to hear from some who have hunted this way for whitetails!

State forest yes, gamelands technically no. Biggest thing is leaving no traces. The masses can't do that. Basically I assume they didn't want people using the limited parking as camp sites. Honestly if you got in a gamelands big enough to do it you'd likely never see a soul anyhow. Might be worth fighting if cited to have it changed. It was my inquiry that cleared the air for quartering on public land in pa. I'm using a solo tent the whole camp fits on my back easy. About 10lbs for tent, air pad, bag, filter, stove

If you saw the outdoor life article with a video on sunday pa hunting I was the young guy at the end. I'll go to bat for anything I believe in.

You're welcome to join, I'm in the center of a bunch of state forest lands.

Whitetail camps spring up in south east ohio every year.

Very cool. Would you mind starting a new thread listing your equipment? I just started looking into some proper equipment.

That sounds like a lot of fun. I'd like to take you up on that. Let's keep in touch :D

Try the book "mapping trophy bucks" by Brad Herndon. Think outside the box and you can apply his map reading techniques to any location. I've found muleies and wts from ca to wi with it. It gives you a pace to go to that's 2-3 miles out in tough country knowing you will most likely find a good travel route.
