Boat advice

Tagged. I have a 13' Vibe SeaGhost that is rated for 450lbs I think. Would love to use it for hunting but for the areas I hunt there's just no water lol. Always been something I wanted to do tho!

I'm thinking nucanoe or old town guide 11 canoe. Canoe is lighter but don't need a boat right now but probably by February.

I ended up with the NuCanoe Frontier. Rated for 675 lbs. Can be used with 1 or 2 seats (either of them is removable). They make OEM duck blinds, layout seats, stand up fishing bars, etc. It is built for hunting and some fishing. I haven't used it yet. I plan to when our duck season hits again on 12/17. I may even get it down there this weekend and use it to access my stands - just always seems like I have too much stuff to pack the canoe.

I have that solo old town descovery. Be careful if you buy this one. It isn't very stable especially if you are dealing with any kind of rough water. I dumped mine on a wingdam in late November Stealhead fishing. It was very sketchy.

I still don't regret buying it though.

I almost got the Hobie PA14, but decided for now the NuCanoe is more versatile for what I want to do. If I end up fishing a lot then I will get the P.A. But for fishing I have always preferred small stream trout fishing. So I think the canoe will be used more for ducks hunts than fishing and wanted a low profile with option of a second passenger or more importantly my dog.

I made it out yesterday in the canoe. Was a little windy but it usually dies down. Dragged the canoe down the access road about a 1/4 mile. Got to the river and there was a strong NW wind at my back on the way in but no white caps in the river. Made rowing in pretty easy. 3:00pm had some doe come in and let that group go hoping to see a buck or two. 4pm another group came in and decided to take the bigger doe in the group. I was using a 20 gauge 870. Heart shot and drop. I stayed in tree till 5:15pm. The trip back wasnt all that easy. I was in a very thick area and had a 200 yard walk through thick brush dragging the doe...got to canoe and the wind was worse on the river then on the way in. Long difficult paddle back and white caps. Man if that wind caught the bow of the boat I was turning...lol. I should have brought tiller motor. I had brought my sleeping bag and a bivy. I thought about just going back to land and camping for the night. But pushed on and made it back. Next time ill bring the motor. Here is a pic of my passenger for the ride home:

That is a good point on using a boat. When I go kayak fishing I usually get out before dawn so I can get some fishing in before the wind really picks up. I plan the days I go around the wind, especially if I plan on going a good distance. I'll have to keep that in mind for kayak hunting too.

I agree. I did change the seat position and the stability is greatly improved. Consider moving the seat about 4 inch's forward and about 2 inch's down. The canoe paddles amazing now. This winter I am adding a spray skirt and maybe sponsons.

This was one of the bucks from last year during muzzleloader season. The shot was about 60 yards out of the kayak. I love floating out deer, it's a lot easier than dragging.River Buck 2015.png

For those hunting from yaks, how do you haul your kill? Mine has a decent sized deck on the back but not sure how big a deer I could fit. Mine has a 550lb capacity and is very stable, just not sure how to haul a kill. My goal for next year is to access an area by yak and kill one from the saddle. We have a really nice lake about 40 minutes from here where I can access public ground from the water.

I haven't gotten a kill yet. But I carry straps in the yak and I plan to strap it down which shouldn't be an issue. Or I'll wrap a life jacket around the deer and tie it to the back of the boat.
