Diy camo climbing sticks & aiders

So I was reading the last transaction last night and felt it was going somewhere that was not gonna be positive but since then it’s resolved.

@Boudreaux presents alot of scientific facts about deer vision and contrary to that @DaveT1963, @g2outdoors, along with others present some real time field experience through observations. I actually find this interesting because all involved are right. Deer while being basically blind do everything @Boudreaux stated in his original post and they do pick up movement extremely well. This is the way they are engineered or evolved too. They live in a different world where if they don’t adapt in this way they die. We try so hard to blend in that we choose camo and everything based on what we think is going to hide us but it is all determined through our vision.

Im not promoting any brand but the sitka and other high end technical camo companies all stem from one company that develops camo and other technical eye/light bending things. These are just half the battle in the hunting game as they help to break up the image and movement of humans. However a deer who lives its entire life watching knows what is normal and what is not as far as movement goes. If you had a property where you left everything like aiders and sticks out year round eventually with enough instances it would be accepted by deer.

This also goes without saying is one of the reasons why you should be encouraged to do season prep as early as possible as trimming lanes and all that other stuff allows deer to adjust to the change. They know when stuff is out of place and when something stands out especially with the movement.

Think of this why is it best to hunt fields for turkeys on windy days vs calm? Well sensory overload is the answer they can’t deal with all the movement and they know that so an open field is much more ideal of a setting for them to feed, etc. This is not always the rule but is the acceptable standard through research and my own field observations.

All in all everyone was right but just missing in my honest opinion something from each other. Everyone I mentioned above has my respect and I truly respect their viewpoints and what they have contributed to the community. Me personally ill continue to spend more money on better camo to break up my outline and movement, along with painting my sticks removing my aiders as to not alert deer to my prescence.

As far as science is concerned - just because something is stated, reviewed or accepted does not make it factual. Science has been wrong many, many, times. Some still believe in a flat planet and global warming and there are still many scientist out chasing bigfoot and the ever elusive "Gay Gene". There is a reason predators have forward facing eyes and prey species tend to have more peripheral vision oriented eyes.

Real Men are humble and respectful... Real men apologize and give Huck bear hugs...
Sometimes real men even wear crocs...
I hope I have not contributed to any friction. It was never my intent - I just want to learn from good hunters like Boudreaux and Dave and G2

Yes back on topic the paint job is great!! @g2outdoors did you have a specific brand of paint you like best? I know they make some low odor and then there is just some straight up rustoleum or krylon!! I guess it would not matter let them air out and spray then with dead down wind!!

Lol !!!! It's all in fun.

Concerning paint - this is the first time I've ever painted camo. I bought the Krylon or Rustoleum flat camo paint (brown & tan) and a flat grey primer. You can see the colors at the beginning of the video.

After painting, I left the sticks outside on the table for 2 weeks through 2 rain storms. I can't smell the spray paint at all. Hell, the sticks come painted from the factory, so I don't think my spray paint would do any more damage than factory paint.

Concerning deer seeing sticks/aiders - I personally have witnessed multiple deer see my sticks and follow them up to me. I have seen that happen more than once. Maybe those were the only deer in the country that could so that? I don't know. I also know that deer pay no attention to my sticks and ladders that have been preset.

My personal belief is the deer notice the black sticks/aiders against the lightly colored tree bark when it's new to the environment (like on a mobile hunt). Maybe they've walked past that tree trunk 1000 times so the new feature stands out? I don't know.

What I do know is I'll take every precaution available to reduce my chances of getting busted. If that means spending $12 on paint and an afternoon with my daughter to do an art project, I'll do it.

X2 small amount goes along way!!

G2, awesome finished product! Did you ever think of trying the tree bark hydro dip? I’ve been debating it but that spray paint came out awesome and would be cheaper

I didn't. I was looking for the cheapest option available.

Stealth Strips are the best option for climbing sticks. They camo and silence them at the same time.

As an alternative, camo hockey tape works really well for both camo and quiet. The adhesive performs great in the wet. The fabric backing on the tape is durable and quiet. It is inexpensive up here.

Hahaha that was awesome.

*steps up on maple syrup pale*

Up here eh, it kinda hard to get stuff cause nobody’ll send it up, lord thunderin Jesus. So wees use the hackey tape any chance we get cause that’s what Wayner or Bobby’d do.

*steps of pale, crushes pint of Labatt 50*

All kidding aside, I’ve used the hockey tape on quite a few things but I prefer the stealth strips. They’re a lot cleaner and last longer. I’ll only use the tape when I’m in a bind and can’t wait to have it shipped to me. And Lou will actually ship all kinds of stuff up here. It’s the only way we can get the hunting beast dvds up here.

G2 I enjoyed your video. Great job. I luved seeing you involving your daughter in painting. I remember my daughter helping me build a duck blind, grinding sausage etc. Great memories.

Now guys I have something to say.

You can fool some of the deer some of the time, but not all the deer all the time.

I really enjoy all of your insights as I begin this journey of saddle hunting. I have learned a lot. Heck I learned how to tie a tubular aider tonight.
