DIY Kestrel Clone

Yes she likes to swing in it she'll be four in April and I have another one in blue for my son I still need to get the webbing on. He'll be two in April.

Thanks ckossuth for the pattern and the information
That’s awesome!!!! You may have the youngest saddle hunters ever.

Looks like its going to be sweet! Definitely a worthwhile project, I got the DIY bug doing a sit drag mod saddle. Will yours include tie off loop right on saddle? (unlike sit drag where separate rock harness is needed)

Just reading through some of this thread, so forgive the delays, but, could you use some bowstring serving for this?

I make customer traditional bowstrings as a side gig and some of the materials are incredibly tough and small. I'm wondering if it would run through a serving machine though.

Nope. I've tried it. Too waxy. I make bowstrings too. Even the low wax BCY stuff doesn't like to feed through the machine. The situation is even worse on the bobbin side. A single strand of bowstring material doesn't have a consistent diameter. It plays hell on trying to keep machine tensions in check.

Now hand sewing with bowstring.... awesome!!!

not bowstring material, the serving. In my experience, it is pretty symmetrical. I also have some string material that is no wax. Not that I think it would work well because the wax semi seals the materials.

you ready to send me your modified kestrel yet for an adequate test? :)

It’s gone my friend! Traded it for a bunch of Hang Time swag!

My materials have all arrived. Getting ready to give this a go. Curious what your guys' thoughts are on the dimensions? Would you change any of them? Wider? Taller upper/lower? Better to ask before starting cutting! Thanks!

@ckossuth 's sketched pattern was 31 x 16. I'm a wider fellow than that (6'0, 275)... I'd be looking for a Size 3 Kestrel. So I did 36x18 and scaled up the dimensions proportionally (well, to nice round numbers anyway) on the 2 I made.

I considered sacrificing an old pillowcase or bedsheet to the cause of pinning a mockup together to judge size, but I eventually settled for trusting the measuring tape. I might-should have done that anyway, because the 2nd one I made turned out a LOT nicer looking than the first, stitch wise (the extra practice would've been a good idea the first time).

I used the dimensions ckossuth provided except that I cut a more accute angle on the bottom side (less material on the back of my legs). Being that I am 6’ and 180lbs I probably should have made it slightly smaller. I am a sitdrag hunter and the additional material seems to ride higher up on my sides close to my ribs which I am not used to. My next one will be scaled down some.
I haven’t messed with it lately as I’m expecting my first child next month and been preparing the house for that. When I get back to working on this project I’ll keep everyone informed.

Overall I am glad I purchased a thread injector and would recommend it to anyone on the fence about it. The few project I have done since purchasing it last year has paid for itself and has allowed me to accessorize tools to better suite my needs. Now I just need more time.

Can’t wait to see the finished product. I am about to by a 60’s model Kenmore machine. Can’t wait to start doing my own mods and builds!

Thanks for the info. We are pretty much the same size...so this was the exact feedback I was looking for.

Congrats on the coming addition to the family! Children are definitely a blessing.

And why he quickly traded it away afterwards...
The craftsmanship is amazing, attention to detail also amazing, super light, awesome camo pattern etc. He also makes strings for trad hunters. I had him make me one only to realize the limb was twisted, so after getting another bow, he is now making me another one. Awesome to deal with for sure.

He made me a string as well. He is crafty to say the least!
