My dad just got himself a Lab/Blue Tick mix puppy. It’s going to be his retirement companion. Any of you guys have advice on good resources for shed hunting, deer tracking, general obedience dog training? Some good YouTube channels would be ideal.

I trained my retriever and used Chris Akin’s video series a lot. She was an amazing retriever and had lots of drive. Sit,stay, here, heel, come, all of the basics are pretty easy to teach. Don’t progress too fast and don’t do any advanced training until the basics are complete. How far are you from NC? I have a buddy that owns a training center there. He’s outstanding.

Western MD. Thanks for the Akins info!

Stonnie Dennis on YouTube is who I used to train my dog and he is great. I know she (collie) didn’t put on the best display when we were at your place but she really does mind well. We take her everywhere with us. You may have to search back a few years but he has a lot of general obedience and command videos for labs. I love his approach and it works. As you learn how to control the dogs energy with play, training and food, then you can train them more and more. The biggest thing is get to training them as soon you pick them up. Their brains develop so much faster than humans, and they’re ready to learn at 2 months old.

All I can say after training 2 labs is you can't over-stress obedience training. Sit, stay, come, heel, quiet, place...those are the words that make a dog possible to live with. Especially hard-headed, energetic, male labs.

That and socialization. Labs are goofballs that love everybody and you have to beat it into them that not everybody wants to be friends and play.
