Last weekend I managed to get away for a quick overnighter to put my new pack (MR Selway 60) and garmin Inreach mini to the test as elk season approaches. Hiked in Saturday afternoon set up camp and hiked out Sunday morning. Used my 3 man tent (ALPS) as my bivy sack that I bought had not arrived yet. Inreach worke fairly well but due to the THICK timber and steep gorges I was in it was fairly hit or miss on messaging at times.
Nonetheless, it was super nice to find some solitude and get some miles in. Walk in to campsite was 8.1 then back out the same way. Site was on top of Laurel Fork Falls overlooking the lake.
Highlight was finding an American Chestnut that was growing from the root stock of one of the old giants that used to dominate the landscape LONG before my time pre-Chestnut Blight.
Also ran into a nice size timber rattler
