Experiences with the Kong Slyde?

I posted a question about people's experiences using the Kong Slyde on 9mm rope for a tether adjustment over on the 2TC thread and got some good feedback. I wanted to post this wider to pick up some more thoughts. I plan to use it within spec on 9mm Canyon C-IV rope. How do you like it? Love it? Problems? Concerns? Thanks!

Wow! I'm glad you didn't get seriously hurt when that slipped out. From the post, this incident happened on a slightly out of spec rope for the Slyde. Given an in-spec rope, do you feel the Slyde is dangerous? I'm toying with the idea of using it in place of a friction hitch on a top tether for a 2TC setup, backed up with the tail end of the tether clipped back into the carabiner for safety. I plan to use Canyon C-IV.

I have no reason the believe if the rope is in spec that it won't work. I think the rope being slightly out of spec and dynamic, which gets a little thinner when it elongates is what allowed it to slip. I've tried multiple times to recreate what happened at ground level and cannot get it to do it again.

Thanks. I plan to check it all out at ground level begore using it at height and I do plan to back it up also with a safety knot. I believe the Canyon C-IV is static rope, as well, so it should be less susceptible to elongation and thinning.

This is good info for sure. I like to hear from people who have used the device in the real world and have hands on experience.

I know this thread is a little old but I've been absent for a little bit-- I have used the slyde as my tether connection with CIV and have not had any problems with it slipping. I have waffled back and forth with it vs a friction hitch on oplux, it just depends on which tether I use I guess-- adjusting up and down may be a little easier with the friction hitch and that will vary depending on what hitch cord and type tender you use. All in all I think it is a viable option with a little added shock absorption if you incur a fall.

I had the same thing happen to me with 8.9mm dynamic rope. Thankfully it happened slow and i caught myself and stood up on my ring if steps. i was in a jx3 when it happened to me.

I've used it on my 2TC tether for a while now with CIV and it works fine. I've noticed several people have mentioned shock absorption. Is that one of its features?

Yes it's designed to slip and provide shock load so always be sure to have a good stopper knot or to tie your tag end back into your system.

This is a method to use it with a friction hitch on Oplux, here a Schwabish, but any hitch will work. The knot in back works as a tender.

I'm curious about this set up. Is it to insure a backup? Is the Oplux slightly out of spec and needs it? Curious. I've had mine set up as below.

Your set up is fine, the Oplux is too small for standard use. For most hitches it’s a way to add friction for a quick, or longer descent, added fairly quickly. There are a few hitches that will allow descending on their own.
