Anybody got some good tales of their times in the Saddle? Strange encounters? Animal encounters? Anyone run into a snake when climbing? Sasquatch?chupacabra?

Let's hear it!

Found a snake in a hole in a tree one morning. That didnt startle me near as bad as peering into a hole one afternoon climbing a new tree to find a full nest of flying skwerls staring back at me. Have seen a couple skwerls miss jumps from one tree to the next and go all the way to the ground. Those were comical for sure. Watched a year and half old buck run into a couple year old black bear on a trail about 40 yards from me. They didnt see each other until they were maybe 15 feet apart. They froze and had a stare down until the little buck had enough. He snorted, whirled and hauled butt the way he came. I thought I was going to get to see a chase and kill maybe but nope, the young bear swapped ends and hauled butt like he had been stuck with a hot prod. If there had been anyone else around I would have asked for a refund. Had a hawk come by me one morning maybe 20 feet out making mach 3 and hit a gray skwerl on the ground out in front of me. Killed it, pecked it a couple times and flew off without it. If it had been down at the river I would have thought the skwerl had been cutting cypress balls as to why the hawk left it but this was up in the hills. Not sure why he left it.

One of the most eerie things was not in a tree but on our little make shift crapper about 30 yards out of camp. Had the pain hit right before climbing in the sleepin bag. Make my way out to the crapper and have a seat. Killed my light and proceed. Next I know there is a commotion in the brush off to my right and just behind me a bit but pretty close. The squealin tells me something is puttin teeth to a rabbit and thats when the whole deal took a turn. The squealin starts moving and gaining altitude. You just think you have pinched a loaf but let me tell you, you can cut one like running a donut through a ban saw when an owl hauls a squealin rabbit over you while you're sittin on the crapper in the woods in the slam dark.

Had a squirrel with nuts the size of hickory nuts run down the tree and bow up at me barking. He was upside down facing me and came dang near head height. He was not happy I was in his tree. It was strange he was so aggressive and not scared. I had a good chuckle.

I ran into an aggressive skunk once. I'm used to them seeing me from a distance and not coming close. I walked out my back door one evening and one was sitting on a little hill about 10 feet from me. I gave it a "go on, git!" And the dang thing come running right at me. No fear.

Any other animal and I would have kicked that thing like an NFL kicker on the 50 yard line trying to win the Super Bowl. A skunk? I don't know that I've moved that fast in years. Since the skunk cut me off from going back into the house I ran to my workshop mashing the garage button hard as I could so the door would open. Thought I was going to have to tuck and roll under the door but it opened far enough I just had to duck to get in. I didn't come out of the shop for about 20 minutes and ran straight back to the house.

Used to hunt in a busy suburban state park. Almost 100% guaranteed to find yourself perched above some interesting animalia (both human and elsewise). you’d be surprised how easy it is to escape notice of the average dog-walker even when their canine has pegged you, or having to “pssst!” a few teenagers trynna be amateur herbalists (jah feel, mon?), then seconds after they pass have several deer trot in and browse. On a serious note, I learned a great amount about how deer can adjust to pressure by just observing these moments.
Squirrels in these kinds of woods are way more gangsta than them “natural” squirrels lol. They will climb right up your tree with you or bark at other critters from nearby trees, they fight over litter, and they’d tell Jesus where to park his pickup if he was the hunter.
