Hanging from GriGri instead of Ropeman?

I bit the bullet and just use a Petzl I'd :)

I love that there is less stuff/pieces to deal with

I don't like the way the tail end of the rope doesn't stay dressed where it should be for good braking (same with the GriGri2).
Running an auto block keeps the tail dressed and keeps it right where you would grab it with your hand.

I never thought about that. I always have the tail in my right hand I guess. When I'm climbing I have to pull rope up through the grigri for the next bite. When I'm descending, I have it around behind in the standard repel position, I guess.

If you have an Autoblock, you can grab the rope above the Autoblock and push up to take up slack. But at some point you have to take the slack out below the AB. I see the AB as an extra panic feature as well as a way to lock off without tying the knot.

This is a good discussion. I like the idea of eliminating my tether and just using my rappel rope. I'm going to pick up a Mad Rock Lifeguard as my descender. I'll probably play around with it.

You still have to have a retrieval rope with a link, right?
Are you hanging from 9mm right now?

I hear ya on this.

Don't forget though that the Petzl I'd is a totally locking design and has an "anti panic lock" which are teeth that bite into the rope. It doesn't matter where the tail end of the rope is placed. The position of the tail end is only important in "belay mode".

It's funny...hanging from 9mm Static feels bad to me. Yale Bandit has just enough give to it...makes it more comfortable. I actually have a 35' Bandit tether. It's not super heavy.

I am planning to try Sterling HTP or a 10mm Canyon rope at some point

We may be splitting hairs distinguishing these 9 and 10 mm options. If we are rounding, technically the samson ultratech falls into 10 mm (9.525 mm) lol

If i nees to lock my grigri i do this. Works like a charm and im also connected to the rope should the grigri fail. (Highly unlikely)

Take dominant hand and pull rope through grigri until there is slack in hollow block and remove.

Never tried that. I like it! Are you using the HSS rope exclusively. I've been thinking about this a lot as well but I've been looking for a good but robust option for the rope since it's my tether as well. Samson Predator works, but I'd like to drop a mm for some spots that require a longer hike in.

Do you have a reason for doing it this way rather than adding a hollow block prusik below the grigri?

I ask because reducing the load above a grigri reduces its ability to arrest a fall, below it increases it.

No im using htp for climbing and hunting, its just easier to use a 8 ft hss tether for pics then unraveling my climbing rope.

I dont use that method, i just posted it so people can get ideas on how to tie off. If you were to fall in that situation the sterling hollow block is all youd need for fall arrest. But if the hollow block was to break the grigri2 would catch anyways, the good thing is you're always tied in and safe to your climb line.

It's really not the weight. More bulk. A 35 foot run of Samson ultratech plus a 6 foot 11 mm tree tether takes up less volume than a 35 feet of 11 mm. But the 35 feet of 11 mm simplifies take down and clean. I haven't run yale through my grigri 2. Any comments on feed? It's on the outside edge of its spec range.
