I started 1 sticking early this season after giving WE stepps an honest chance. I went with the stacked outdoors stick, mainly because they were in stock and sold as a single. It has its pros and cons. The depth of the steps and the standoff distance are the biggest pros. If you need to take a short rest, it is very easy to sit on the top steps. For example, I was about 10’ up in my climb the other day and heard a deer coming in from behind. I had to wait her out for a good 5 minutes to resume the climb. Just sat on that top step with the tether cinched up and hugged the tree. Never got busted. The cons are the cam buckle and the positioning of the “buttons”. The buttons are situated a little lower on the stick than other models which means that you have to either reach a little farther down between your legs to get it loose or reach around under your thigh. I use the Cain’s method and prefer that to swinging off to the side. There’s very little risk to dropping a stick that way, especially since they steps don’t fold. I either have the stick pinned to the tree with my tether or have it pinned with my crotch depending on what position I am in. The only mishap that I did have this years was with my cam strap falling off during a stick move, but that was only because I was using a cam strap off of a XOP stick which has slightly larger loops than the factory stacked stick. I thought it would make for easier hook/unhook from the buttons, which it certainly did. I was able to use my gear grappler to retrieve the strap and continue climbing. I have gone back to the factory cam strap to significantly lessen that risk. I have also moved into rappelling since that hunt and if it were to happen again, I would simply rappel down if I did ever drop a stick or strap.
Has anyone tried putting a cam cleat on a hunting beast stick. They are lighter than muddy pros and super durable. Folding steps are not a must for me since I am not packing my stick in a pack.
