Kayak Help.....

Not telling you what to buy; just suggesting.

I have a Mad River Legend for one purpose. It is designed I believe up to class III rapids. The tracking is not great, but the safety is that the canoe has secondary rocker stability.

I bought that with the safety in mind. I have used it for duck hunting, fishing, Boy Scout canoe trips with my sons etc.

Yeah I’m still researching & asking for input. I thought initially I was going to be good at 5-700 bucks but as the search goes on I may end up upping my budget for stability & ease of use on the water. I haven’t settled on anything yet, Dave & g2s rig make me wanna start fishing though........

That's what I'm talking about.

My Hobie is primarily a fishing Kayak. However, it works just as well for killing all sorts of mammals.

G2’s rig has me needing a second job! Lol
He’s got more wrapped up in that baby than me in my truck! His Hobie is nicer.

you should check out the rigged NuCanoes decked out for fishing. Complete with trolling motor and remote control steering. Sorry but some of them will make the Hobies look like generation 1 fishing kayaks. JK G2 so mop that drink up :) Seriously, the Nucanoe mods are incredible and with a completely open deck the sky is the limit.

Agreed, I watched the 2 pig kill with his kayak setup the other day & was amped. Then reality set in & I thought about all the other stuff I got in the works this year! I think maybe that’s where I end up but prob not what I start out with. Thinking Nucanoe f12 is probably my ceiling for now........ we’ll see still trolling Craigslist & letgo

Id try the cheaper used options first unless you have a lot of water approach options and they aren't that far of a paddle...especially if you aren't into fishing. Ive got a wildnerness ride 135 that I use for hunting occasionally and a Old Towne predator PDL that I love for bass fishing(wouldn't risk leaving it stashed on public lands).
There is a WMA that is boat restricted Id like to get to, but its an hour paddle easy.....Id rather use a john boat and gas motor + tolling motor. Gheenoe would be awesome and you can find them reasonable on craigslist occasionally. Jon boats and motors aren't hard to find cheap either, but generally require a trailer and more storage space

I haven’t seen Dave’s rig but Greg rig is awesome the foot pedals are sweet i don’t know but I’m sure u can mount a motor on Gregs rig but might be a nice dent in the wallet

I cannot use a boat for deer hunting and or transporting a deer. It is prohibited by VA.

I assume this all goes back to the King & Queen laws in Virginia. You have riparian and non-riparian rights/laws in Virginia.

Yes the Nucanoe is super nice. So are the fishing Kayaks. But these are all heavy, and costly. A regular old fiberglass canoe can carry way more gear, down at the water line. At the same time they are stable in big water and you can carry them around by yourself on your shoulders.

(not my photo - just an example to show how much room there is after the deer is loaded)

I hunt with a conventional canoe a lot. They are quiet, cheap (depending on what you get), have superior capacity, while being light and seaworthy.

I completely agree with this.

That's the route I would go if not using it for fishing.

My budget is still shallow as well, kinda dreaming/researching at this point. My daughter has shown interest in kayak fishing, so maybe my initial interest has evolved........we’ll see how it goes. Would absolutely love to find a used F12!

I found mine on Craigslist. They are hard to find though.

I have several boats. A canoe and a 16’ double wide jonboat. I would tell you a canoe is perhaps the most versatile boat out there for hunting and fishing. I have duck hunted, fished, more times than you could imagine from it. I can put 2-3,kids in it with me. I Use it for Boy Scout canoe trips etc.

If you are set on kayaks, they are great for big water. If your children are young, I would suggest a tandem kayak

Just my vote and opinion.

The jon boat anymore gets used a half dozen times a year.
