Kbetts 2017/18 hunt log

Wrong time and date. I switched cameras because this one is a little grainy. Three of the group of four. I hung a set inside the point of woods at the top.

Deer in the field when I got here. Wind is just switching from northerly to more south. Nice and settled. Took a little longer than expected to get right. I brought six more steps and still want at least four more. These big, Ameristep Grizzlies are wonderful to stand on. It cool enough that a doe might be in trouble.

Spraying today. Great for covering your scent.

Intense night last night. I worked around our new little "cabin" a little late and had to hustle to a stand. Bucks were about 50/50 in/out of velvet. You can see things changing.....they were running, chasing, acting all sorts of crazy. Everything stayed just on the edge of what I consider max range. It was pin drop quiet and I couldn't trust the arrow would get there before the deer moved. A lot more patience in the older age.....lol.

Nice kbetts, sounds like its going to happen for you soon. My season started yesterday and got out for a morning sit, no luck. But I will be out this afternoon. You plan on hunting this afternoon?

Recon today. Took down cameras and moved some steps. Acorns are everywhere. Rubs and a couple small scrapes are opened. I'm getting pumped. Weather is changing and so are the leaves. Shot three bows before my daughter's soccer practice and I'll shoot again later. Washed the pack, hosed down the saddle...
It's time.

Ok, front moving in this weekend. Let's get this journal kicking :D

Last sit was last Saturday night. Pretty uneventful as I was checking an area that is more of a producer later in the year. The canopy is still thick and dark comes quick. I've had no desire to hunt this week as temps are near 80. Smoke pole season right now. I've shot most of my big deer with a ml so the challenge doesn't feel like it's there. C'mon rain, wind and cool temps.

Next week

I'll be going a few times over the next 3 days. It's hot again in GA. I'm contemplating doing a mobile hunt, but I know I'll sweat my butt off.

I'm going to have to catch up. One thing we never have a shortage of is big rubs.

Not sure what to do today. Hard west wind which doesn't play well. I had just enough north yesterday. Ever notice how some days nothing can smell you? No scent Lok guy here, not particularly a high stand hunter either. Got away with a big doe and a fox dw last night. Usually a fox will pick up a boot track.

I feel like I should go tonight and take an evening off tomorrow with the family (really it's cause I'm duck hunting Sat morning). Now my 9 yo daughter wants to shoot a deer too. That means less time in the saddle and Daddy needs a Double Bull. Getting ready to get real busy.

Checking the weather. Thinking of taking the day off Monday. Thunderstorms, 65 and rain Sunday, west wind at 20 and high in the mid 50's Monday. That's what we look for.

Ok, off on Monday. Looks like it may be an all day affair. The issue will be keeping myself in a tree. I really enjoy ground hunting and have called in quite a few bucks in thick cover where a tree would limit the shot selection.

Now the decisions....do I risk going in and bumping deer in the dark or wait till grey light which has worked well for me in the past? I have to cross fields and I hate doing that in darkness. I have two set ups that would put my face to the wind with no issues but my back would be a field. I'd be trying to catch a buck cruising the inside edge after sun up. Not a typical tactic of mine but I feel it's a safe bet. I'm looking for a hammer and they tend to do things a little different. Somewhere, in one of those bottoms, a big one or two is hanging out.
