Let's see those traditional set ups

I have way too many recurves and longbows - these are my two latest from Abe at Caribow

Dave, with photobucket holding everyone's pics hostage, you may want to repost your beautiful Caribow purchases...

Ok, trad guys......
I currently hunt with a 14 year old PSE Nova compound and am wondering if I should go compound or traditional when I replace it in the next 2-3 years. What is you guy's effective range?
i.e. What distance are you TRULY COMFORTABLE with shooting at a live, alert animal?

I am not great with the longbow but I pick it over the compound. Longbow is 15 yards and compound is 25 to 30 yards max. I hunt very skittish deer.

Depending on situation, 30 yards in a heart beat for me. Not on an alert deer, but naturally. Although average shot the last 30+ years would be more like 15. Remember you can make your set up whisper quite, and still reach 180 to 190 or more feet per second with shooting traditional equipment. Lots of options..... Trad, is fun, and rewarding!

My new RK1 recurve... I hunted with my 68" longbow last year and feel that I have a further effective range with this setup for a couple reasons: 1) 10 pound lower draw weight 2) skinny grip similar to a compound which is much harder to torque. I'd feel comfortable out to my point on of 25... Less than that on an alert deer.

Hate to dig this far back, but have you remained happy with your RK1, and do you think it is worth paying as much as a compound? One of the main attractions to a recurve or longbow is hopefully finding something cheaper than the current compound prices. (Which I think are kind of ridiculously high)

My Titan 3 with Dryad acs-rc limbs has been my go to bow for 4 years now. It is a great string walking rig. I shoot easton Axis and the fmj’s. I am getting sick of bent fmj’s though.

It was a small Mississippi “juvenile” Eastern Diamondback it had two and was 6’+ long:smirk:

Our diamondbacks will have 5-6 rattles by the time they hit that size. Timbers will have 6-8. That one looks like it had quite a bit of meat on it... would have made a few good meals.

No, seriously it was a huge rattle snake no matter what state. The land I hunt has quite a few and normally 4-5’ are common.

This one I shot one cold morning in 2013 after 12:00 when temps had warmed up from a low of 28* to low 40’s.
I was walking a two track when you know how you get that six sense? To me it was the Lord, saying stop, don’t move, look around.

I did, and there’s this Huge “Andaconda” and She/he rises up like a cobra and start striking the air!

Long story short it’s time on earth came to an end, and later I went back and opened it up to see what small boy or girl it had swallowed.

Man, those sure are pretty!

I’d be afraid to hunt with them for fear of scratches or damage!

Go check out Sarrels bows, thinking of taking a drive out there and let a bow find me.

They don’t make them the same in Wisconsin. I shot this one at 10yds! I couldn’t believe I made the shot.
