Thanks guys. This deer is special because I got to share the experience with my son. It is a memory that I will definitely cherish. We were watching over a cutover. We had passed a spike earlier and a saw a couple does that were to far away. My 5 year old son was getting kinda bored and thought maybe we were hunting the wrong spot. Then 100 yards below I caught a glimpse of a rack. I knew right away he was decent but didn't realize how nice. Thought he was just a decent 8 point. He was just standing there. What I did not realize was that he had a doe with him. Not sure if they were bedded there the whole time or if they had come in through the thick brush. I quick whispered "big buck". I had to shoot a little high to clear the brush he was in. Upon the shot he disappeared and it was then I saw the doe. She jumped up and ran about 10 yards. For the next 5 minutes she stared back to where the buck had been. I waited holding my breath hoping he wouldn't reappear. After several minutes we packed up and headed down. I was pretty confident he had died right there because of how the doe was acting. Sure enough he had dropped in his tracks. He was a larger deer than I had realized. Interesting thing is I passed up a decent 8 point in the same cut over last year that looked similar. I actually took a pic through my scope last year of the deer. I am wondering if it might be the same deer. Either way I am pretty stoked right now!

Now here is the question @redsquirrel. I was using an old permanent stand as my platform but was using my saddle tethered to the tree. Does that still count for points for my team?

That’s great that you got to do that with your kid. Definitely a hunt you will remember.

Happy thanksgiving!

I left the saddle at home so I still hunt some state land and ended up setting up about 60 yards from the most ridiculous amount of buck sign I’ve ever seen. I counted over 2 dozen rubs adjacent to this rub cluster. I’ve never seen that much signposting in my life.

Yes every part of that tree is rubbed and it even has branches snapped off. With a scrape underneath it no less!

Nothing ever came to visit it but I did see a large bodied deer about 200-250 yards out but it moved to quickly and was getting too dark for me to see what it was.

Still a great sit on state land. If I get a good wind I’ll be back to this spot.

Happy thanksgiving everyone!

Saw 3 does last night and 2 this morning. I was lucky enough to get sick right in time for my week off. I have only been hunting a little and I haven't been more than a couple hundred yards from my truck since Sunday. I probably shouldn't even be going out but well, I have problems.

I was hopeful this morning. And of course thankful to be hanging 25 feet up ... handful of does and a 4 pt hung around for quite a while.
