Milk weed container

I drill a hole in the bottom of a film canister. It will hold about 4 pods, which is usually a full seasons worth. It even fits perfectly under a loop on my backpack's shoulder strap, so I can just reach over my shoulder and grab/release. It even pulls the next bit of milkweed partially out of the hole, so it is basically a self feeding system.

How big is the hole that you drill in the bottom?

I'll have to measure when I get home, I used the tip of a knife on the last two and just spun it in a circle until the hole felt about right.

So can someone post an accurate picture of milkweed? I find so many different pictures that I really don't know what to look for. Also when do you pick the milkweed?

Here's about what it looks like now. You're running low on time to pick, at least in the cooler climates. Usually I pick some time in early September before the pods burst.

What do you do to dry it. I just picked a coupLe of pods yesterday, they are still green and closed. What's the next step to making them useful?

Cut a slit to let the air in and let them dry for a few days.

I just started using milkweed this season thanks to a forum member ( rollie100 ). I'm amazed at what I've learned about the subtle wind variances. If any other southern hunters can find someone up north to ship some, I would do it. Funny to think of all the powder I've puffed into the air that only told half the story.

I been looking for some here in SE Michigan. Haven't found any yet. Guess i'm stuck with talc powder...

In the stand tonight I puffed the powder , hard right. Then I release some milk weed, it went up a bit then traveled the opposite direction and stayed 20 ft in the air the entire time. Crazy.

The next time I run into some I will pick it for you. And then pm u for address

I like to cut the full green pods and put several in either a large envelope or a paper bag for several weeks. We usually start getting pods ready around mid June here in northeast Texas.

I use a woolite mesh laundry bag

https://www.amazon.com/Woolite-Mesh-Wash-Bags-2-Pack/dp/B004K6L806

When I pick them, I crack open the pod and pull out everything and put it in the mesh bag. I hang the bag in front of a stand up fan to let everything dry. I harvest the seeds and throw them out to a place that is convenient for later harvest. The fluff, I take what I need and put it in a coin purse.

also the pods can be tough to spot at first glance when everything is green. When I was trying to figure out what milkweed was, I was staring at some plants that I thought maybe were it, but didn't see any pods.
Did see this fella that I thought was cool looking....

later that evening trying to research milkweed photos more I realized that caterpillar only eats milkweed. So if you see it or a monarch butterfly, its most likely milkweed

went couple days later and dug around in them to find tons of pods

@Hurst1 Pm me your info and I will get some to you. Surprised there is none in NC. Here in VA it is abundant. Particularly in ditches and field edges.

I took the finger off a rubber glove and packed the milweed in it and tied it off like a balloon. I cut a small slit in the end of the glove and I can pull as many out as I need.
Same thing that I do, I just carry mine in my bino pocket on the side of my harness. That way I don't have to worry about it getting ripped open.

Thanks,
Boswell
