Off season plans

Got a good stringer of gills from the yak this morning. Been a long time since I've targeted just bluegills but it was a blast!

You eat those gills?
So many people look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them that's about the best tasting freshwater fish there is. Lots of work for the amount of food, but DANG tasty. I might have to put it above crappie..... might.

Yes sir. They were dang good too! I bet I hadn't eaten blue gills in almost 20 years. I may have to go after them more now lol.

You joke, but I've known some old timers to eat it.
I just can't see eating a fish that requires tin snips to clean.

If it's the area I'm thinking of, i really love it. Deer or not it's a nice place to hike around.

A couple of my buddies make, and no joke, Gar balls. No, not like mtn oysters. They also get creative with getting to the meat. Snips, Metabo, etc. Then they just use an ice cream scooper and carve the meat out. Fry like any other fish. They love them. Yes, I said they. I personally won't be trying them again. I'd rather eat the bait

Bairds Hills / Port Huron State Game Area. Easily best terrain in SE Michigan. Whole stretch along the Black River is picturesque. As for deer there seems to be plenty of sign to suggest they are around. Best sign i've found is in the remotest areas. Last weekend I found the most promising spot yet - rub city about 1mile in from access on the border between public/private in a marshy area.

Haven't found too much other hunter sign, but have talked to several people up there and the consensus seems to be the same: Bow season is lightly hunted but rifle is a zoo. Based on what i've seen so far i'm optimistic for the fall.

It's starting to get really busy.

My first turkey season starts April 19th. I'll have 4-6 tags like usual.

Bear season (the baiting portion) opens up April 15th. Sites and cams are ready. Just need it to happen.

Border archery is building me a new recurve. My new covert hunter will keep me busy tuning.

Plus, summer is right around the corner. Like most hardcore whitetail nuts, I'll be squeezing some velvet rut action around fun with family and friends.

On the downside, the work schedule has been aggressive. I'll find myself in the Middle East for another 2-3 weeks after Easter. Some turkey tags will be eaten. Bears will go hungry. Regardless, life is short, but life is good. Live it up!

My son scored on his first turkey this morning! Nice little Jake. 5" beard. We belly crawled across a field with a Jake decoy above my head and they came running. I'm a little jealous his first turkey was WAY more exciting than mine! LOL
