Got settled into a spot I'd never been to before for opening day in Michigan. My dad and I were sitting in front of the same large oak tree on the edge of a cut bean field. I proceeded to call 2 jakes and 2 toms into the decoys at 10 yards. For some dumb reason I decided this was the year to kill them with my bow, but also not to use a ground blind while having no cover. I ended up having the birds at my decoys for 5 minutes without an opportunity to draw. Finally they started to move off, I drew and they saw me move. They started moving off semi-fast but not running and I took a shot right over the biggest toms back. Honestly I don't even remember the process of taking the shot. My dad luckily pulled up his gun and shot one of the toms, so it wasn't a total bust. Turkeys sure aren't smart creatures but they sure do get lucky a lot. Or I just make dumb mistakes too often. The next day I got busted by 3 toms that I thought had flown down but were actually still on the roost and had shut up. I sure do seem to get plenty of "learning experiences" chasing these birds.
