My unit from the Marines does a reunion every year the last week of Oct, in Jacksonville NC. I usually do not go because I am hunting in MO, but I plan on attending this year. I want to take the few extra days and possibly hunt some public land in NC during my trip down there. I will be coming from the midwest so I will be driving through most of the state so any area really works for me. I had a few questions below if someone could give a little advice, I would appreciate it.

1. I know it is during rifle season. Is rifle season on public even doable or is it overran with the orange army? I plan on hunting mostly weekdays to help with the crowd.

2. Any areas recommended? Not asking for your spots just areas of the state.

3. Any other advice would be really welcomed, this would be my first out of state public land hunting trip.

If your coming down during the gun season, you may have to contend with dog running during your hunts in the Croatan. Croatan is north east of Lejeune, and has the least amount of restriction. Holly Shelter to the south west towards Wilmington has the most restriction on when dog hunters can run dogs. Both have some permit only areas.
Then you always have base. Get a Nc license, and the UXO safety brief and Camp Lejeune hunters test can be taken online after you create an account at lejeune rec access. Google that name and you should be able to find it and creat an account. After you finish the safety brief and pass the test, you have to go in to the game wardens office on a weekday, prior to 1500, and get your base permit. I’ll pm you my number. For additional resources, there is a back country hunters and anglers chapter on base: Lejeune_BHA_AFI, which I am the chapter president of. The others are Camp Lejeune Hunt and Fish, Camp Lejeune Military Hunt and Fish.
