Maybe stupid question but what kind of knot is that?

so whats the concern about the Samson ultra tech? Being the technora stuff it should be perfect for rappel yeah?

ive got a mini 8 and the 9mm htp almost seems like too much friction to me. Only reason I want to try an 8mm

People (myself included) often get bored and want to be innovative.
Don't do that with your rope. Especially the rope that is your sole attachment.

Just to be clear...you can 'get away' with all kids of things.
I just think it's smarter to use the gear that pros have used day in and day out...don't be a beta tester when there is readily available purpose built gear out there.

We beta test the Sit Drag because we don't have a commercial product to use that way (and because we are bored!)

Oh yeah....

And I've hung from Amsteel, and rappeled on 9mm accessory cord. It WORKED but not as well as using what climbers would use

The results could be absolutely fatal , when there is a failure. Please be Safe !!

Would be worth a call or email to them and ask. You'd find out pretty quick if it's OK or not. What we do is a little different than most we aren't rappelling over 100'. We are going 35' at the most.

I just sent them an email so I'll let you guys know what they say.

Looks like the ultra tech is ok!
"I was wondering if the 8mm and 9mm samson ultra tech is safe to rappel on when used with the appropriate equipment. It would not be used for climbing on, just for rappelling down from a tree for a distance of 20-35 foot."

Samson:
Hi,

Thank you for your interest in Samson! I checked with our Aborist Sales rep and he said that would be fine to use with diameter to rappel with. We only sell and quote through distribution, so let me know if you need one to contact.

Thanks, Linda

Got my sterlng 9mm, today, and screw locking rock exotica. Yesterday the grigri2, came,.but haven't had a chance to use it yet. Looking forward to seeingmm how this whole new method is going to work out. New clmbrite spikes to climb, and new ropes for repelling. Kid in a candy store !!!20170124_150926.jpg

I think I'm going to try that GriGri
The gri gri is great, I think it is perfect for us. It is a little bit bigger than an ATC or one of the other ascenders (but it is still pretty small), but I think it makes coming down so much safer (I'm not messing with an autoblock using the other devices). With the gri gri I can put all of my weight onto the device, and get myself into a position I feel comfortable with to go down without worrying that if I let go I'm going crashing down. I rappeled down with the atc one night while it was in the 20's and really windy. My fingers started to get cold just having them out to get the rappel gear in order. I could definitely see myself losing the grip on the rope or something bad with cold hands like that. With the gri gri I don't have to worry about that.

The gri gri is only rated to 9mm rope.

I realized myself, that , when it's cold, probably a whole lot safer! I don't bounce as good now, as when I was younger.
