Ropeman Safety

THE Camp Matik from all of my research seem to be one of the lesser shock loading devices around as it gives some rope while locking to lessen the shock load on a fall.

Can a Ropeman 1 be used safetly with the ropes that are provided with the Kestrel? I ordered a Kestrel recently and was thinking of buying two Ropeman 1s and using them on the bridge and on the linemans belt.

Is the rope that comes with the Kestrel to big? Would this idea be safe if backed up by prusik or other knots?

I had been using klemheist for years, but someone here recommended the Blake's hitch, so I switched to it. But so far, I think I like the klemheist better....it only loads in one direction (down) and is super easy to move away from load. This looks kinda-sorta like a klemheist so I can see It's advantages.

I liked this one too but was a bit harder that the V.T. to unlock for me the V.T> works much easier with 2 finger operation and im 260 pounds

Do you have to take some of your weight off of it to let some rope out?

thats what i was wondering but this one by Camp can be self belayed with the device loaded by using the brake which has a panic mode for safety.

Yes the ropeman1 can be used with the predator rope.

Backing it up is up to you. The ropeman1 has a 4 kN rating, which is a very minimal fall. We should not be falling on our setups the way we use them, but redundancy is never a bad thing....

Had a new one to me at least today climbing with my XOP hand climber. The cable attached to the ropeman 1 got caught between the rope and the cam and as I put my weight on it, because I hadn't noticed ofc, is slowly slid down, easy enough to fix, just one more thing to look out for.

Here is the pic. Not a lot of leftover. Not sure how close you want to make it. I have a micro pulley on it to make it more one handed. You can easily make your tether longer with one hand without the pulley. To shorten it still requires two. But this thing doesn't bind at all like a Blake's hitch. If I can I will make a video.

Hey DwadeCham, what is the purpose of the pulley in your setup? Could you use the same setup but with a ropeman instead of a pulley? Sorry if it is a dumb question, I am new to saddlehunting.

The pulley tends the hitch. You wouldn't use a Ropeman instead of the pulley. The Ropeman would be used to replace the whole hitch/pulley system. Long story short short, the Ropeman and htich/pulley system each have pros and cons depending on the application.

Here's a couple videos showing a hitch/pulley system being used as the primary climbing hitch and as a lanyard adjuster

I like the V.T. with 5 wraps and 3 weaves at the bottom im big and heavy #260 all other rope grabs lock up too tight when loaded the V.T. is the only one that I can free up. keep it dressed properly hook it above your ropeman 1 or better yet the CAMP MATIK.
IM NEW HERE

What size hitch cord are you using and whats the main rope size? Ive used a 10mm hitch cord on 11mm rope and it grabs great.

Hey Sam, sorry for the late reply but I think the question was answered. It tends the rope. Mainly for the way I climb it comes in handy to allow one handed operation to make my tether shorter. I climb with aider only so it helps to change the length of my tether with one hand. I switched from the ropeman die to this thread. I think they are safe but decided to try this hitch with a pulley and have used it all season. I like it and the rating is higher than the ropeman.

My Kestrel came with a linesman belt that had a blakes hitch tied for adjustment. The blakes hitch on the linesman's belt takes two hands to move the knot forward and shorten it's length. That is a pain but is easy to fix and make the linesman's belt one hand adjustable. The device called a Shizll Rope Slider. Here is a video I made a while ago showing how it works. The video was made to show a friend and not for posting to a forum so it is a little rough but the information is good. https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipMVnKbQv8Fq1ZQ_LpSxoeQCGDnM8uzGKbthVPnM

I bought it from TreeStuff dot com. Here is a link www.treestuff.com/store/catalog.asp?item=2076

At the end of the video I refer to a ropeman on my bridge but it is actually a Roll N Lock www.treestuff.com/store/catalog.asp?item=12216

I use a shizll on my linemens belt and it works good but its too expensive for what it does. You can get a micropulley for the same price but a pulley is much more functional as far as uses are concerned. If they were priced around 7-8 bucks it would sell better.

I received my Kestrel yesterday and began playing with it and my wild edge steps. Right away I was unsure of how much slack I needed in my linesman belt to lean back to lift my leg to next step. So I was trying to adjust the Blakes hitch to find the sweet spot of appropriate slack. That is when I realized that the blakes hitch is a beast to do one handed....

Soooooo...Im thinking I like the ropeman 1 idea for the linesman belt. My questions are: are you guys tying something below the ropeman 1 on the tag end of the linesman belt? Can you post a pic and/or explain the reasoning?

Should I get a ropeman 1 for the tether as well?

Should I forget the ropeman 1 and just learn how to adjust the Blakes hitch?

Thanks!

Ropemans all around. Buy two for sure lol. I tie a simple knot in the end as a “stopper” knot so it won’t slide through somehow. They are very easy to use and a must have item for saddle hunting imo

Ropeman works great but I prefer the hitch on my linesman’s belt because you can smoothly let slack out while it’s under load. It could be Difficult to shorten the hitch on the linesman belt but if you put a small ring or small pulley below it, it’s easy. See post # 214 for some examples.

Ropeman 1, Ropeman 1, Ropeman1.........
They are incomparable I’m ease of use. I will never go back to a Blake’s hutch or Prussic knot. I think they really shine on linesman belts.
