SaddlePalooza - Feb 16-19, 2018 - Official Thread

Here's a quick update:
Everything in the yellow outline is open for big game weapons for SaddlePalooza 2018. Last year, the opposite side of the installation to the west was the only thing open. Also, nearly all of it was closed due to training. Most of the training occurs on the western side. We should have access to PLENTY of land to hunt this year.

Keep in mind you can hunt right by camp (purple star) if you use a shotgun (slug only) or a bow/crossbow. The area around camp is known for having a lot of pigs.

This is going to be a fantastic hunt. I can't wait!!!!!

How much is rim fire only? It seemed a lot of the West was open but only to archery and rim fire last year? I thought all of f and e was closed last year?

You can use a kayak to access areas but discharging a centerfire, rimfire, or muzzleloader from watercraft is against Georgia law. Also against Fort Stewart regulation. Not even supposed to be loaded while in a boat. Shotguns with #2 shot or smaller ok but I wouldn’t recommend shooting a hog with #2 **** unless you get real close.

The flipped the rimfire only are this year. Last year the east was open to rimfire and archery. This year the east side will be centerfire and the west will be rimfire/archery
I think you all hunted the west side below 144 in the D areas. Most of the E and F was closed.
The best hog sign I saw a few weeks ago was viewed from the road looking down off the pond dam at the campground.

There isn't a problem using a kayak to float the creeks an swamps to sneak up on pigs an shoot from the boat?

No problem using the boats for access. However, it's technically illegal to shoot from your kayak. If you saw/heard pigs from the river, it would be no problem to stop the boat, get out, and shoot them.

Eric is right. They flip-flopped the open land.

Last year everything to the West (Fox & Echo) was open for big game weapons. However, most of it was closed during our hunt for training. That's why we were limited to the Delta areas. We were simply unlucky with our timing. This year, everything to the east (Alpha, Bravo, & Charlie areas) will be open to big game weapons and the west (Delta, Echo, and Fox) will be small game only. We should have 100,000+ acres of land to hunt.

I really planned on using my kayak to just get back in some swampy areas an hunt from the saddle. It is saddle palooza right? Lol don't wanna be at saddle palooza an not be hanging from a tree.

I don't think anyone hunted from the Saddle last year. But that's a fantastic tactic. I have a few spots prepped and ready with climbing sticks and a platform as well. You'll need boat access to get there.

Don’t they have weird centerfire calibers that they permit? Anywhere I can find the regs on that again?

I’ve got a .270 and a .22-250 (I’d have to put a new butt on that one to use it)

There’s a very weird list of approved calibers for using on their small arms range. I don’t think anyone would have a problem unless you showed up with a 50bmg. The people that made the approved caliber list know what a 5.56 and 7.63x51 are but that’s probably it.

you can shoot both of those. They limit the use of certain calibers on the range, but not in hunting.

I was planning on bringing my little boat, good for 2-3 hunters MAX, lol, but I've got a little trolling motor so it's kinda nice. I'm still not sure on the weapons allowed but that's just because I've been lazy and haven't read all of the rules yet.

Getting super pumped for this trip!

They're pretty much all allowed. Some sections will be limited to shotgun, archery, or rim fire.
