Sand casting aluminum tree steps.

dennism said:
It's still moving forward but slowly. I have everything I need to melt and the aluminum to melt. Only thing I need to be 100% is to make greensand. Which is just play sand mixed with a powdered clay. Time is still a issue. This Saturday my sister is going to baby sit my son and my wife is going shopping, so I have the day to myself. I'm either going to melt some metal or scout the state land down the street. I haven't been able to get any scouting in this year.

Good luck whatever you end up doing and enjoy yourself. It seems time is always an issue... :(

anything ever come of this?
Funny you ask because I was reading through this thread again the other day wondering the same thing.

those strap on steps were the old API skyhook steps. They had a version for lag bolts and one that used straps. Hindsight....... the I beam interests me and I thin with a few mods that may actually work well. I was thinking a little more mitering on part that touches tree to make cleats to dig into the bark would help?

Dave you want the step to have minimal contact points and have them spread out. The smaller the contact point to the tree, the easier it bites and of course the further they are apart, stability goes up. I think some creative cutting on the i-beam will yield great results. I would plan to have 4 contact points and none of them would be on the vertical portion of the I beam. Go for it and keep me posted.

Cool stuff hope it works out. I've been wishing for a long time that someone would explore the option of aluminium steps . Back in the olden days when I worked at an achery shop in the eighties and early ninties loggy bayou used to sell these.

and I was alway hoping that I could get a hold of 5 or 6 of them and put them on a strap. The only problem was the starps did't thread through the step. They had some little lip that hooked to the strap, but the size and design are perfect. They were light as a feather as well.
Some other cool homegrown options That I liked.

Anyone know who made these? I would like to talk to them and see how they worked. I ordered some I beam and I plan on hand making two of these - until I get it worked out to where I am satisfied. I will no doubt go with a 2 inch hook belt and 2 inch boat buckle. If anyone knows who made these please PM me

I'd love a set of these also. How did they work.. anyone else try this.

I looked to see how to PM and I must be missing something.. didn't see an option for that. I'm a 'saddle newb'

I've been thinking about doing something like this since the first thread I read on this forum. I was wondering if anyone had a few extra steps lying around that I could borrow to make a cast with. I would prefer the kind that had a strap slot.

Erich,

This is a pic of that step that I told you about. It looks very similar to the one in the photo that you posted. I got a set of 3 of these on ebay a couple years ago. They are API strap on steps. They are very light. My only complaint about them would be they do make a very loud ping when they bang together.
Red, where did you get that metal step? I'm almost ready to start casting, need to make some models, thought something like that would be a good place to start.

Would you consider letting me borrow it for a bit? I'll pay for shipping.
