Scent control regiment and FACTS about activated carbon

I bought the Cabela's MT050 parka and bibs with Scent blocker trinity and gore tex in a previous season. The tag said 40% more effective than carbon. It was an expensive set. Reading this thread makes me feel a bit ripped off. I just did an internet search on scent blocker trinity and found a site talking about scent lok winning a law suit against scent blocker trinity. Cabela's is now back to using Scent Lok on their MT050 line. Yup not happy to find out I spent a lot of money on a inferior falsely advertised product....

Now that many of us have new kestrel's what's the de-scenting recommendation?

I believe it’s not recommend to launder in a washing machine but you could probably get away with running a cold water delicate cycle with scent free detergent.

Do not tumble dry though. The instructions specifically say to air dry out of direct sunlight.

I plan on washing mine in a 5 gallon bucket with scent free detergent and then air drying. I will simply agitate by hand every few unites for 20-30 seconds.

Now that I found out about activated carbon packs on Amazon I ordered some of those and will start with putting the saddle in a unscented garbage bag with some of those packets

You talking about these? or the fish aquarium things

I have always wanted to get the carbon filters scentlok makes for storage containers, but they are like 30 bucks!

I thought these may be good to throw in my gear box. But I left them in there for a few days and the stuff in the box still had the same smells like the new smell of the kestrel. So I don't think it did much.

Hmm, well thats not good. I am curious if anyone can tell us if these work or not. These are sold by scent lok to put in containers. My problem is that my new air tight containers stink like plastic.I have tried washing them, putting baking soda in them for a few days, and just lettign them sit outside. Still gets the stinky plastic smell when they are shut for an extended amount of time. Maybe its the foam used for the seal on them? I dk

Sorry, I haven't used these or any other packets with activated charcoal. I use the powder itself and sprinkle it in my bins and have good results that way. It turns stuff black though, so beware!

My guess is that the smell is coming from the plastic and it's "deep down". It will probably just dissipate with time. The same thing happens with most of the rubber boots I have bought.

Yeah, i plan on putting all my stuff in ziploc bags for the mean time and using the tote to transport them. Kind of bothersome, but should work

Many plastics off-gass for quite some time after molding. Not much you can do about that but wait it out. Some plastics and rivers will have a strong that takes a long time to dissipate.

Hi, guys. I'm new to tree saddles this season, and I am having my best season yet--by far. I love the saddle, and I love this site. After a couple of months in the saddle, I have a few simple questions about scent control:

1. This year I have worn Sitka over scentlok treated base layers. My goal is to have the scentlok close to my body to absorb human odor, and have an entirely scent-free outer layer (including free of the scentlok smell). I use a strict scent control regime, similar to John E's above. After a hunt, I'm frustrated by the fact that the Sitka gear carries the Scentlok medicinal stink. And the stink is really hard to wash out--REALLY hard (multiple washings do not entirely remove the smell). So, is my Sitka now the equivalent of a scentlok suit, or does it just stink?

2. I have hunted from tree stands and used a strict scent control regime for the past few years, usually between 15 and 20ft. Now, with the saddle and aiders and advice from this site, I am hunting around 28-30 ft. If anything, my scent control this season is worse b/c I am wearing Sitka outerwear instead of scentlok. But I am seeing more deer than ever--a lot more and more mature deer, and I suspect that if I were higher I would see even more. So, how much of "scent control" is attributable to height alone?

3. I really dislike and mistrust the scentlok medicinal stink. If I can smell it, the deer surely can. Should it be viewed merely as a cover scent? Wouldn't it be better to use carbon powder in the base layers, and a scent-free outer layer?

Welcome to the site! I'm glad you like the site and that these techniques are working for you!

Can you clarify what you mean when you say "scentlok treated base layers"? Do you just mean scentlok baselayers or are you doing something to them? I ask because I don't know what you mean by the medicinal stink.

Thanks! I am not treating the scentlok base layers, other than with an occasional recharge in the dryer. They have a unique smell, which is especially strong when it comes out of the dryer after having been recharged. All my scentlok gear has this smell to differing degrees--gloves, headcover, base layer, jackets, etc. The longer I go without a recharge, the less I can detect that smell.

I know that chemical smell. Some coat I bought years ago that was scentlok had it. Got so bad I had to say to myself if I can smell this, so can a deer and retired it.
I'm guessing its the glue they use in the liners or something. It shouldn't have any smell...carbon doesn't smell
Just wash and dry it in some scentfree stuff, hopefully itll help...adding more carbon powder to your scentlok stuff doesn't hurt it. Makes it better, but makes you dirtier

#1 priority is the wind

That is interesting. I have never smelled that.

I have smelled it after my garments have gone a long time without reactivation. I assumed it was the charcoal was loaded up but maybe it’s something else. I have definitely smelled it before though. The one piece I remember it most was a much older scentlok face mask I had gotten as a hand me down. I don’t seem to notice it at all anymore with my newer scentlok gear. Maybe it’s worth emailing scentlok about? They are usually pretty good about answering questions.

I was thinking about this more. The only time I notice a smell is in my face mask. It seems after I have it on for a while a smell will develop on the inside. It is very faint but I do occasionally notice it. I would not describe it as a medical smell though so I didn't relate it.

Just my face mask gets a noticeable odor to my nose but a wash and recharge makes it subside.
