Sitka

G2

I have a Kuiu Teton insulated jacket. It is quieter than regular insulated jackets. That's the advantage over say a North Face. On sale, it isn't stupidly expensive

I only wear my hiking layers as insulators. I always have some sort of camo layer on the outside. And I'm not opposed to really nice hunting clothing...it's just the prices some of these guys are asking are cray. From my perspective, a hunter can get more use out of an item by not buying hunting specific (camo) insulating layers. But again - that's just my opinion and opinions are like a$$holes, right?

If a hunter likes the really expensive stuff and feels like it makes him/her a better hunter, then I'm for it. Go nuts. Spend 5k on camo. Who cares? You can't take it with you, right?

I have an ASAT leafy that I can wear as camo over anything too. But I have been trying to find technical clothing that wasn't too noisy. The Sitka and Kuiu stuff is quieter. You aren't just paying for the camo pattern.

I recently got some soft shell snow pants for $15 at an outlet that aren't stupidly noisy. WARM

FYI...Kuiu has some things on 'Outlet' sale now. I'm not spending $5k on camo, but $100 for insulated zip off pants that are quiet isn't crazy.

I've had this Gray Wolf Woolens wool jacket for about 15 years now and it should last me the rest of my life. Custom made to fit me and it wears great. Money well spent and I love the predator pattern. I'm glad to see some of the companies moving to a more open camo pattern.

Guys, I have worked for traditional retailers (Macy's and other department stores).
I have worked for Direct Sellers/vertically integrated companies (Victoria's Secret and other brands) that make their own products. The mark up paid from product construction cost to final consumer price is not so much dictated by the number of 'middle-men' as it is by the value of the brand.

Under Armour doesn't charge less for the same product in their own store than ****'s does for that product. Victoria's Secret's parent company owns the supply chain. Yet, their mark up is higher than a company like Playtex who outsources various pieces of manufacturing, logistics, pays commissions to their sales force who sell to stores who then sell to the final consumers.

So don't buy the 'no middle man' hype. That has nothing to do with math and everything to do with marketing. Bet you didn't think you would ever read about the product margin of bras when you logged in to saddlehunter today...

Since you've purchased your Gray Wolf Woolens the ownership has changed. It is now owned by Bill & Laurie Shepherd. One advantage of buying clothing from the Sheperds is not only are the clothes first rate, you are buying them from the people that make each garment at their home. If you were to tear it or a zipper were to break or whatever, call Bill or Laurie and send it back and most likely they can fix it. I don't know it you can get that kind of service from the bigger companies like Sitka or Kuiu....

Oh yeah, WOW!! That's an awesome buck....

I own a lot of wool and I like the craftsmanship aspect of it too. But the weight is an issue. I got a Gray Wolf/Bisongear pack. It was NICE...but it was very heavy and I returned it.

Clothing is the same. Thick wool can be nice and cozy for sitting but it SUCKS in wind. I just sold a Woolrich Jacket that weighed like 8 pounds and replaced it with an insulated modern tech jacket that is warmer and can be rolled up into a stuff sack.

I had some Columbia Galatin wool that was extremely comfortable but again...wind would leech through it.

I just got some Cabela's Wooltimate pants and the hybrid jacket that is much better but I haven't gotten to use the pants on a cold sit yet. All of my hunts this year kept happening on warm days.

Gray Wolf offers Wolfskin as well as the wool. It's lighter in weight than the wool but still top quality material and they offer a wind proof lining as well as insulated and un-insulated garments.

Haha. You know, I sometimes think that the Good Lord likes to watch me hunt. I can just picture Him watching me with a smile on His face as He shakes His head while He watches me ineptly do my best to out wit a mature buck. Under His breath, I can hear Him mumbling "what in the world is he thinking?". I think I provide entertainment for Him and every once in a while, He tosses me a bone just to keep my interest and desire up so I don't give up.:D That's okay, I'll take a bone whenever it's offered to me.

I like the way you put that Ricky and respectfully agree. I have thought along the same lines so many times. "Lord did you so graciously grant me dominion over your animals so that you may find humor in my effort to exude such"? I'm so thankful to get the chance!!!!

I owned Kuiu and sold it for firstlite. For cold weather the sanctuary suit is bomb. It's very quiet. The new Woodbury jacket is quiet and and what I wear in October November. I wear their wool too and it's amazing. I own almost everything first lite makes and like the fusion pattern, so didn't switch ;don't plan on it) when Sitka started making whitetail. I would put firstlite up to Sitka any day and would even say it's better in a lot of the garments. I do own a incinerator muff from Sitka which I like a lot.

I own first lite merino base layers and they are top notch. Got them cheap at the end of last season. They always sell off there Realtree stock of camo at really low prices.

Where are you guys picking up sitka stuff and such discounted prices?

I just purchased a fair amount of Sitka gear as well. I will agree the cost is crazy but I only justify it in the sense that first I hunt around 80-90 days a year, I believe in the technology, and the quality is legit. I still need to work out what I will be buying for my cold weather gear but I have some time for that. I have not seen much gear that wasn't used for less. However prices go up every year and there are cheaper ways to go about it, shoot I have done that for many years. Hunting and the outdoors is all I do so Ill make the investment.
