"The Hunting Public" and Using Headlamps Going into Woods

Please tell them their show is excellent. Also get them into saddles! They will be far more mobile and less sweaty because of the reduced weight. Good show!

Absolutely - Zach will be first in I'm sure. I'm headed out for the Turkey Tour with them in a few weeks - here's a link to the intro video.
Much of that footage for this piece I filmed Bc THP boys came from Midwest Whitetail and they had to start from scratch. I'm humbled to be a part of their journey; Aaron and I make a fun collaborative musical team. Aaron gives me ideas and I fire em the tunes!! Here's my studio...

This will be my hopeful contribution this year - using my 1962 Sweet 16!
If anyone on THIS list ever wants some tunes for videos (G2 who costs me money Bc of his stellar videos and sales pitch for all things saddle, for example! ), let me know. I love doing it as a labor of love. The Hunting Public boys were thrilled to be mentioned on this site so I'll be taking a saddle out to Iowa in a few weeks!!!

I watched some of the THP videos yesterday. It looks ya’ll have a lot of fun.

I usually use a cheap headlamp with the red lamp but will probably upgrade cause I also don't like that they are dim. Years ago i got into the habit of storing it in my sight cover bag so I remember to put the sight cover on. Thanks @ImThere for the link, think I'll get 2.

I'd also like to apologize for taking the thread off topic earlier - the fellas from THP just inspire the heck outta me and I want everyone to enjoy em as much as I do!

I was actually watching the newest THP video when I opened this thread. Tell them to keep doing what they are doing I love their stuff.

Regarding lights, I have used red, green and white. I settled on green to walk in because the red lamps werent quite bright enough but I am not sure green is any better than white. I think the main thing is to get an adjustable light and use the lowest setting you can get by with. My green headlamp has 3 settings. I use it on the lowest setting unless there is something I need to see better then I turn up the intensity for a second and then turn it back down.

I use a green light or a red light to walk in with. Call me crazy but i would say they react less to light than some guy falling all over the woods. I have 2 extremely bright lights one is red and one is green. I've eased past deer in the woods and they never spooked off I generally try to keep my light down and try not to break stride even when I see deer in the dark. Bigasports told me about a guy that runs to his stands, I tried that on a couple of occasions last year jury is still out on that one.
I also use a green light walking in and out and while climbing. Never had deer spook and I don't lose my night vision .

I always use my headlamp. I have literally walked right up on deer that just stare at me and walk off like they really don't care. I don't think they know what it is so it doesn't alarm them. I haven't seen any negatives using the light. I am also a lot quieter in the mornings with my light on since i'm not stepping on the unseen sticks.
I could not of said it any better

I bought a cheap light and reversed the clip by drilling and tapping the other end. Now my flashlight clips on the bill of my hat. I could never find a head lamp that was bright enough. This cheap light is extremely bright I have it in Green and Red lights

What would you say the run time averages? I love a good light in this price range that I can grab a whole bunch of and just have them everywhere. I get less upset about the kid, or myself if I'm being honest, losing the $10 light versus $150 one.

Honestly, I don’t know. I used it all last season and it’s still working. I change all my batteries at the beginning of each season. I will use these during turkey season and change them before Deer season starts. I think they will last pretty good. So far I have no complaints

At that price, I couldn't refuse. I have been looking for a green light.

I use a green pin light now. In the past I never used a light. I have had deer spook and not spook with both a light and without. Personally, I think the deer can see you weather you have a light or not if you are close enough. I just decided to go with a light because I can stay quieter and not step in holes.

I always just go cautious with or without a light. I'd rather get up at 3 instead of 4 to make sure I walk in totally unheard and unseen. I think light or no light if you take your time and don't snap limbs and walk fast you are good. The 8 point I killed in NH last year ended up being 50 yards from me in the swamp in the morning. He never budged and got up and crosses under me at 8 when I shot him. Im convinced if I waited till later to go in and didn't take my time id of ended that hunt quick. I had a red light going all the way in too aiming low to the ground just to see where I was stepping.

They can see all lights - even red. But bright white or yellow do tend to spook them more. Here's a test on whether different color lens spook game the same - try sneaking close to roosting turkeys with a red lens (they see ALL colors) - not all that hard to do - then turn on a white light and try it - impossible. I have spooked deer with all color headlamps - but it goes way down using a faint red lens in my experience. I personally like trying to not use any light, but when I do it is a faint red light as it does not disturb MY night vision and I can see well enough with it do do most tasks..

I have to agree with @DaveT1963. This has been through my experience as well. Most times im able to navigate the woods at night without a light but that takes alot of patience, time, and practice. But x2 on the faint red light

I had to dig around in my cloud server to find this video. It's from two years ago in late January on heavily pressured public land. Granted this yearling buck doesn't have a lot of experience but I'm telling you I was approximately 5 steps away and it was like I was a ghost. He never looked my direction or got spooked until I tried to get his attention. This was the exact non-responsive experience I had with a 170-180ish buck the following year. I was still in the tree in pitch black and had the light on him the entire time he walked straight to me and under my tree.

Maybe it's my Eagletac/Sportac headlamp with invisible white light only humans can see??

I do use a red light to get to my hunting area but my thoughts on the white light is deer seem to be like coyotes. Hunting coyotes at night, the white does not bother until you make the wrong noise, just like when, in video that Ark rider posted, when the guy said hi, that deer knew that was not right.

Here's the big buck I had right under me with the same white headlamp. Again...heavily pressured public land. We had over 100 pics of him that year using invisible infrared Reconyx cameras. We know he made it through the season because we had a picture where he had shed one side in early Feb. Unfortunately we had zero pics or sightings of him this past year. IMG_0219.JPG

I heard their pod cast last year before the season started and thought eureka! I’m trying that. I now think the same at Fliningairos. The deer don’t seem to care at all.
