The lightest multi-step aider ever conceived?

How are the lock stitches holding up? What is the bury length for the lock stitch sections?

Hey you know a lot more about amsteel than I do but if you started with the bottom Loop or the first step in the middle of the Rope you would have both ends to create locking brummels all the way to the top. And for the final Loop or the small Loop that connects to the step could you not do a locking brummel small Loop locking brummel and Burry both ends into the small Loop? I'm not sure if this is possible. I will try to come up with a drawing later to better explain if need be.

Bury length is roughly 3". I couldn't figure out a better way to do it other than heavily stitching it. If someone can figure out a way to do it without stitching that would be sweet! I used a bundle of strands out of a scrap piece of amsteel to lock stitch it and it didnt budge when I tested it. Another thing to note, the extra pieces I added to the foot loops to help hold them open are sitting against the standing part of the rope so there's really no way for the rope to get pulled up inside itself. That probably doesn't male sense but not sure how else to explain it haha :D
You can whip it like a bow string as well. I've never tried that method, but Amsteel recommends it.

This is all way over my head and I'm not afraid to admit it. :worried:

The diagram is a bit hard to follow... I want to build one but I was wondering if you could splice in 4 endless loops to make your foot holds.

I would add a bit of bulk to the foot loops to stay open and would take 5 pieces of amsteel. Maybe someone can improve on this as @flinginairos suggested.
Anyone think endless loops spliced into the main rope would work. Maybe a amsteel video expect can make a video for us.

I just made a 3 step aider doing that. I started with about 10’ of amsteel and made a locked brummel in the very middle. Then made the next two loops with locked brummels but alternated the “loop” strans so that the tag ends would be equal length. I then lock brummelled the ends and buried each tag end about 6”(picture taken before bury)

I don’t have much experience with amsteel so I don’t know if the lack of a bury at every step is going to be a problem but I just tried it out at ground level and it worked well.

Looks good!! I knew someone would figure out a better way. If they don’t slip with your full weight on them they should be fine! I prefer the three step myself after trying both the 5 and 3. I can get just as high with the three step spaced farther apart.

I’m finding I like the 3 as well. So far they are holding on really well and not slipping.

Thanks for coming up with the idea! It’s definitly going to help me cut a lot of weight this fall

Awesome work gents, I think it's time to get on this amstel wagon, I think for that weight and bulk it's hard to beat! Thanks for sharing.

Just curious has anyone tried both ways? Is either way more likely to spin on you while climbing?

I made some Amsteel aiders and didn't like them personally. They did kickout easy on me, even with putting my toes against the tree. They hard for me to get my foot into comfortably while descending. If you added some rubber hose to the step area that would definitely improve the ease of descending. I made up a webbing aider and a braided steel cable aider that I am more comfortable with using. The braided steel poly coated cable is quite heavy at over a pound and packability isnt that great, steps have 6" long pipe nipples to reinforce step. The webbing aider I built has 1/2" rubber hose in step area. Both are easier to use but heavier.

I ordered some 1/4" Amsteel in Olive Drab color this morning. 50' should be enough for some neat projects like this. I still have a couple hundred feet of the 1" camo tubular webbing.

Any chance you’ want to let loose of some of that camo webbing?

KYHunter, any chance you could explain your locked brummel? I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but my “locked brummels” are not locked they slip out. Not the ones on the bottom continuous loop where the ends are buried but the ones in the middle. The foot loop strand that’s longer wants to pull even with the “center” strand. Sorry if this is a dumb question, I’m new to amsteel and I just can’t figure it out from you tubing.

I never made one like this but it looks a lot like a daisy chain. There is a video on YouTube that explains the knots. Just search amsteel daisy chain. It’s one of our member’s videos. I think it would work.

I couldn’t take it anymore... finally bought some amsteel. I’m hoping it packs, at least, as well as webbing.
