The red squirrel climbing aider

I have no doubts. keep in mind the 1.4 lbs is the stick only. You will need an amsteel rope mod. I have weights on the other thread.

I know people keep throwing this 1.4 lbs number around BUT you cannot attach a 1.4 lbs stick to a tree. The math just don’t work.

with it being that light, integrity would be of a concern for my tubby self.. maybe that's just me though..

I am going to commit to my steps. With the red squirrel (non videoed ;) ) aider, I think it's going to work out perfectly. I am currently doubling my aider I use to climb with as my tree tether. I am trying to carry in a minimal amount of equipment.

I also second that carrying stocks through cover is miserable. I was getting pretty tangled up this past weekend while trying to get my sticks through the thicket. The stepps wont ever give me that problem.

Why not? See the math on the value of a pethorated stick. I reported the losses in the other thread.

@redsquirrel I know you mentioned that it was slightly harder when using a single step, so I was thinking about putting two Bullman steps on a strap. Do you think this would work? Would I have to use an over the center buckle, instead supplied cam buckles, to get the strap tight enough. I'm worried they might slip sideways under side pressure or would they even be getting much side pressure?

@Boudreaux Tagging you as well as I watched your video reviewing Bullman steps as a platform. Thought you might have some input

I am asking because I am looking at moving away from climbing sticks (gave mine to my brother to try to get him back into hunting and away from a drug filled past), and I want to order here soon. Season is almost over but I like to start practicing earlier, as I am a slow learner with a thick skull.

Thanks in advance.

Two steps should work good. @redsquirrel mentions it above. I question whether the bulk is more than a stepp when packed. That is the biggest benefit of the stepps. Weight:Volume ratio (density) when coupled with an aider. At the current weight point of 6-7 lbs to 25-30 feet, density is everything. Only way to nirvana is spurs.

I did not know that... false advertising. Dave's modified sticks, or wild edge plus red squirrel aiders, these are competitive and cheaper

That is sadly the industry standard. No credit for attachment method nor safety harness. Saddle hunters keep it real.

The average safe hang on hunter is carrying a 5+ lbs of hidden weight compared to the reported weights of saddle setups. We don't segregate attachment straps/ ropes, linemans straps / ropes, and safety harnesses. We are honest with our systems. we don't just look at the platform.

I guess that is why Muddy claims their sticks are 2.5 pounds when they really weigh almost 3 pounds each.

Yes, this will absolutely work with 2 steps on a strap with an OCB. I tried the bullman steps like this but I can not get 2 steps on a strap tight enough though. With ameristeps I can.

@BassBoysLLP, I can't find the post where we talked about doing this with 2 ameristeps on a boat buckle. Anyways I did buy enough ameristeps to rig up a set. I hesitate to post this because it really is just a tease, I also did pick up enough of these to make a set. Much smaller, lighter and more compact than ameristeps. I have been using 5 of these for my mobile platform for a few years now. Most people wouldn't want to stand on them but I don't mind. As soon as they popped up and were available I bought them to try with my aider. Problem is I have seen them for sale twice ever and I bought them both times. A step of this size alleviates your concerns about bulk for using 2 steps.

Stopped at REI today picked up 20 foot of 11 mm static rope and 25 foot of 1 in green webbing from Bluewater. So now I am ready to make Reds climbing aider with a ropeman 1. That's for the idea.

Good luck!

I hunted with this setup 2 days last week - an epic hunt to say the least but I'll post that in another thread. Let's just say maiden voyage I got a lot of practice with the aider...I have a new lease and only set foot on it twice previously, so I did a run n gun to a spot I wanted to explore more. I packed in 7 stepps, the aider, a backpack with food, water binos and an ozonics unit, my rifle and wore the kestrel in. I waded through a creek to get to my spot and this was a really comfortable pack in. The set up at the tree was slow still - but first day I had a soft bark tree and it was the three stepp platform that was really giving me fits. It's that third one that is the PIA. With the aider I was able to get to 22 feet to my feet with 5 stepps and used the last two to go around as the platform. On the second hunt I had a smooth bark tree and the setup went quicker - but still not adept at setting the 3 step platform quickly so got slowed there again. Definitely need more practice getting them situated so they are reasonably level, not camming over on another strap and not shifting. For me this has been the biggest area of opportunity to improve - once I get it it's very comfortable (to me) but it can test my patience - it's good I have some. The aider system itself went well. What I learned about that was I was more comfortable on a narrower tree - I liked to get my other arm around the back of the tree to assist in pulling up. To maximize my step height I lifted the ropeman as high as I could reach, and to have the freedom to lift my leg up over the stepp, I need to loosen the LB a good bit - so I'm flipping the LB up, holding it from slipping down with one hand and pulling myself up using the carabiner with the other. On a 24" diameter tree, it got harder to grip the tree and hold the LB up. But the narrower tree was much easier. Looking forward to keeping at this though - it's so mobile and light. Speed I'm less concerned with for now like I have said before.
