The red squirrel climbing aider

The 1.4 lbs is with the strap.

Wow sign me up. Glad I did not get any climbing stuff for Christmas they will all be outdated soon.
Hey Dewey can you put a stick on a scale and take a picture to kill the skeptics.

WOW. That is amazing. A standard cam buckle strap is 7-8 oz depending on model. That means this entire step minus the strap is near or less than 1 lb or equivalent to a single Jim Stepp/Wild Edge (if he is using a cam buckle). If he uses rope to attach, the stick is about 1 lb 2-3 oz. A couple more ounces if he springs for Amsteel. Sounds like an amazing breakthrough. Almost too good to be true.

I don’t think Dewey’s testers have the perforations... so the weight is fairly heavier.

Mine are almost a 1/2 lb heavier. They are one of the very early prototypes.

No idea. Hoping before next season at the latest. Last I heard he was still exploring production options and waiting for quotes.

He’s probably going to have a hard time finding someone to extrude them. I hope not.

There is an aluminum extrusion company in my home town. American Aluminum Extrusion. Cleaver name.

Fair warning to anyone using the red squirrel aider. Tonight I was climbing up just like practiced in my back yard and when I was getting up on my 3rd stepp, my foot that was in the step slipped off the tree and had I not used all the proper climbing and safety equipment I would have busted it! I will have a good bruise on my side, but luckily nothing more.

Be careful out there and be sure you're safe at all times!

Also, a worthy note: the teee I was climbing on was slightly angled and was not straight up!

Was your foot in the aider and did aider kick out? That can get you puckering a bit. Have to stay very focused on toe to tree. I also keep aider and tether to the left of the stepps - (because I put my left foot into the aider) so its not sliding around on the stepps. Good reminder post. For me the risk I have is when I loosen LB to make the step onto the WE stepp.

I have been climbing with aiders so long I don’t even flinch when it kicks out (rarely happens anymore). I always have a grip on the tree or a climbing stick above me.
Slipping on the top of a frozen climbing stick unexpectedly will make you pucker!!!

I have used aiders on my climbing sticks for a while that have always been connected to the step. Yes, the toe to the tree is what got me, but as I stated in my second post, the tree was leaning a little and I wasn't climbing up a straight tree. The aider kicking out actually wasn't bad. it happened so fast and I stopped before I even knew I fell. The problem was when I stopped my rib made a full #230 contact with the stepp ladder step that was chest height (haha). It wasn't too terribly painful, but i'm reminded of "toe to tree" everytime something accidentally bumps it! lol.

I believe I may be finished with the stepp ladder steps for the time being, most likely forever. My 17" steps weight less than 2 of them, and I can get about 5' with 1 17" stick and aider, 5 of the 17" sticks weigh right at #10. with 4 sticks it would weigh around right at #8.

I know I can use a 24" aider and make the step relatively comfortably. With heavy clothes, it can be the slightest challenge going up. If My math is correct, with 4 17" sticks, I'l be able to to get a little over 5' per step. This summer i'm going to ut down my 32" sticks with 24" steps as well and that'll give me 7 more inches with each step, which would be a GREAT thing! I would give me closer to 6.5' per stick with aider, would reduce my weight by close to #3.

Glad you are ok . Anytime we leave the ground we have to be careful because things can happen fast. That's why I try to take my time while climbing. I know that we all get in a hurry it is better to be safe than sorry. Good point about the tree leaning.

I don't feel like I was in the least bit of a rush. But, my focus wasn't necessarily on keeping my toe on the tree and before I knew it, it was behind the tree. haha.

Glad you are ok. Leaning trees are always tougher with aiders. It is a good reminder to everyone to always be careful!

I didn't mean to say that I was just saying that things happen fast and anytime we leave the ground we have be very careful. I know sometimes I have tell myself to slow down.
